#1389458 Mashburn- View Profile	Questions I’m going to breed mealies & I have a few questions. First of all can you use chex as a substrate/food source? can you use one of those plastic three drawer containers as a cage? And can you start with 700 meal worms? thanks in advance!

Oat meal or oat bran would be an ideal food/substrate and you can mix that with some chex if you like as well. Yes, you can use a plastic bin to contain the worms, as long as there are no holes or cracks in it. Seven hundred worms should start off just fine.

I started out with about 50, fed about half to my dragons, and have about 25 beetles now. I am using the drawer thing. The only thing is that I keep the beetles in a separate container, about shoe box sized, with the top off. I think I read that the beetles need a lot of ventilation or they will die quickly. I wouldn’t use the Chex b/c of artificial ingredients. Apparetly you can get chicken mash at the feed store, but I am using oats.
