 Freezing Mealies?

Has anyone tried this? I have a small ziploc in the freezer now, I am experimenting with, but have not tried to feed them to the T’s yet. If the T’s don’t want them, I can still feed them to my chickens.

I have so many, that I cant keep them all in my fridge, besides, in the fridge, some turn black (dead)

What are you trying? It will kill the worms in the freezer. Don’t know if your t’s will eat them dead or not.

I know they are dead, but dead and fresh is better than dead and black - like the ones that died in the fridge
I guess to better explain why I am doing this, I have more than I can use right now. They will only last so long in the fridge, and once they die and turn black, they are useless.

If I can get my T’s to eat frozen thawed, I will always have a plentiful supply, plus like I said, I use them to feed to my chickens (and turkeys) too.... as a treat.... they love them.

I keep my extras in a tub of oatmeal and bran, with a potato slice for moisture. They morph into pupa, then into beetles which in turn lay more mealies. I have found that it is no effort at all to breed them, and my water dragons will eat all three stages, so I no longer lose them.

I wish I had some of those. Mine seemed to have stopped producing and I’m running out.

Go ahead and freeze them and give it a try.

Carmelita, you should check with the local pet stores and see if they would be willing to purchase some from you. Also, you can always put up a note at the vets and/or local pet store and feed store if they have a bulletin board.

That is a really good idea, except that I live in a really rural area.... we do not even have a pet store within at least an hours drive.... lol. There is a free classified at our local grocery store, I could try and advertise there, maybe people would buy them for fishing?

Yeah, mealies are great for fishing (especially ice fishing). What kind of turkeys and chickens do you have? I have some chickens and a turkey too!

Our poultry is strictly intended as pets. We did not get them to butcher, nor for laying purposes. Of course, when we get eggs, that is a bonus.
4 Cornish Cross (one of which is a rooster)
5 White Rock (one of which is a rooster)
1 Barred Rock (hen)
8 Guineas -five dark blue, 3 light blue (no idea on the sexes)
1 Rio Grande Wild Turkey (Tom)
2 Mixed Turkeys - not sure what (I think one is a Tom, and not sure of the other yet)

We had more, but our dogs took care of a few (lost a total of 2 turkeys, 2 guineas, 1 barred rock, 1 white rock, and lost a turkey that just died on its own - I think it was sick when we bought it)

They are so fun to watch. I tried to tame them all, but only about half are tame to the point where they will fly up on my shoulder.
