I have one, and I think they make great pets. What do you mean by a small box??? I keep mine in a medium sized Kritter Keeper that you can go out and buy at any pet store for like...$6...Id research just a bit before you snag one. they are pretty easy to keep, but youd want the basics before you get one. also, check around to make sure its legal in your area. Some Praying Mantids are protected, and it could be illegal to capture one. I know its illegal to kill one here in NJ. If caught, you can get a $1,200.00 fine....Just research a bit....

For a small Mantis, Id go with a small cage, since they need to find their food easily. In a big cage, theyll have trouble, especially for a small baby mantis. I dont no the laws in W. VA..So I dont know, but im sure it isnt illegal.

About a year or so. Females may live just a tad bit longer.

i went outside and he was still there so i caught him. hes in a large coffe can with some grass twigs and leaves that match him. hes only about 2 inches so i didnt put him in our empty 10 gallon. do they normally bite cause that hurt! and can u hold them. hopfully a fly will get caght in our window soon. and how often do i feed it. anything to help me tell gender. most of the ones i saw were green but the one that bit me and another one were brown?

My guy was brown as a baby and stayed brown til adulthood. And yeah, their bites hurt. Lol. Babies will jump. They hop like all hell, my guy would hop everywhere. You cannot just hope a fly gets caught in your window, go out and buy some small crickets. Give him 1 about ever 2-3 days.

i looked at him yesterday and he was like an inch bigger. then i saw his skin on the ground. im gonna guess thats normal? oh and every time he gets right up to the grass hopper it jumps away.maybe i should cut off its back legs, so it can craw but not jump.

Yeah, I held mine as a baby, never as an adult. He would never let me. Lol..

Yup thats normal, he just molted. Means hes growing. Hopefully yours wont be like mine, everytime my Mantid molted, he got meaner..Lmao.

Have you tried crickets?? What I did was leave a light on outside for a few hours after dark, attracted some moths, and fed them to my Mantid...

That’s a beauty of a mantis, African I see.

Why don’t you hold them as adults? I always held mine like that. Only time that you can’t, is when they start slowing down, (getting ready to die) as their balance is just unbelievably poor.
