Not sure the actualy name but they are similar to stag beetles with only 1 horn. They are very common in Japan and often kept as pets. I have several and would like to train them to wrestle. Does anyone know how to do this? When put together they usually just ignore each other or start having sex (2 males)

what do you mean by mean? Its not cruel its just what they do in the wild. All they do is flip each other onto their backs to prove they are the strongest. Problem is they dont seem to care when I put them in together. 1 or 2 pushes with the horn then if the other doesnt fight back they just ignor each other.

Yep, that’s how they compete for a mate. I guess they are wrestling in this contest for their dominance or they are somehow provoked or something, unless they get a share in the prize money.

I have a female and I let them mate? Was that a good idea? Maybe if they already had sex they dont want it any more and wouldnt compete? Right now I only have 1 male but soon as another flies through my window Ill give it another shot.

Well I tried putting a male in while 2 were already mating, not a fair fight but very interesting!! The new male tried to break them up at first, attacked the male but he was too small. In the end he gave up and just climbed on top of the female and joined in! I kid you not! I dont think he managed to get his penis inside but he was poking around with it for about 10 minutes before the female looked stressed and I broke it up. After the sex I put them 2 males together see if they would react but nothing, just walked away again. Good fun but like I said, not a fair fight.

Making them wretsle sounds mean. Yeah, they do it in the wild, but doing it just for your veiwing pleasure sounds mean. It’s like making to people fight just for the fun. Or forcing horses to fight with each other. It’s a cruel sport.

Im not sure how they did it in that picture, but i have heard that they get a fake log and hollow it out and place a female inside and seal it with ventilation holes up the top side of the log. you then place the two males on top and then they catch sent of the female and fight over it. Also, how do 2 males have sex? do you mean just sex, or mating sex?

Actualy, yes. I hate them both. (But if the people WANT to fight, then I can’t do anything about it. But the bugs probably don’t want to fight. If they wanted to fight, then you wouldn’t have to make them.)

You put two males together and 1 female and they do the fighting ritual. I don’t believe its cruel its just a mating tactic thats been going on for millions of years and can determine which male is most physically fit and has the healthiest sperm to create top notch offspring. Its like two bucks fighting for a doe and the loser walks off unharmed.
