 My Kings

Hey all...

So I’m new here... 23 year old guy from Cape Town, South Africa....

I’m a Kingsnake lover but also have a thing for boas, gophers, milks and corns... Heres some of my pics... Most are oldish pics however...

The Banded Albino Cal King I had until a few months ago... sold her eventually. She was pure evil even though she was so pretty.!!! I kinda regret it now tho

My new baby Banded Coastal Cal King... He’s so pretty and even tho hes small he is so brave. When i put my hand in the tank he literally just climbs up, hes so inquisitive/curious. This is the one I’m worried about about the eating. He’ll be fine hopefully...These were taken in the pet shop a few weeks before I got him...

At home...about to shed so his colour is faded tho

Home for now until he gets bigger

And then my baby.... Bumblebee the Florida King. Hes a nice biiig guy. Probably about 1.9m... He is soooo nice tho. Seriously the most mellow snake I’ve ever come across. Last year I took him to the vet as I thought he may have had a RTI. The vet showed me how to give him his shots and told me its better to do it myself as then i dont have to pay all the huge bills for a months accomodation at the vets.
When I gave him his shots (someone held his head) he just struggled a bit but when it was over he just looked at me as if to say ’why did you do that?’ then carry on with whatever it was he was doing before. No tail rattling, coiling, nothing. Hes so cool...

Lemme know what you think!
I’m maybe getting a baby sinaloan milk, baby grey banded king, adult albino gopher and corn (amelinistic+albino+silver) babies soon...will post pics

Nice snakes!! There is another person from South Africa who frequents the corn snake forum as well. I was curious as to how easy it is to get kings and corns where you live and if they are terribly expensive or not.

Those are some awesome kings! That Florida is a monster! Very nice. The albino is gorgeous, but I really love the bands on that coastal Cali king. You have a nice collection....and it looks like it’s about to get even better!

Not keeping anything on gravel anymore... I’ve done some reading up and changed the substrates... Just why is it tho that gravel is good for them??

Thanxx!
The only king I had that musked alot was my very first banana california king, about when I was 16... He calmed down within about a month after getting him and the musking stopped after about 1 week within getting him. Maybe I guess I’m just lucky but I’ve never really had a snake that gave me problems with this... With the new banded california baby (Comet), the very first time I picked him up at the petshop, he bit me twice (although I never even felt it) and musked on me. The next time I was there, he calmed down alot.

One thing I do tho is I try and never take the snake by ’suprise’. Whenever I wanna take one out I first let him see my hand and keep it ahead of him so he gets my smell (with kings, usually anything the see the fist thought is ’food’!, so I never just touch him), then I go ahead and lift them up. It seems to help rather than just putting your hand in and picking them up, which IMO can take them by suprise, scaring them a bit...

Kings are easy to get hold off, although it depends on what type. Typicall banded cali’s (coastal and albino) are found easily, and go for quite cheap (around R300 - R400 (+- 32 - 50$)) although I paid a bit more for mine (80$). Others, like desert calis, high whites, lavenders, etc are quite hard to find.

Floridas are hard to come across as well. I’ve got the only male in my province (state) probably. Theres a female brooksi I’m thinking about getting too... I’ll probably have the only breeding pair in the state then i think, (maybe I’m wrong)

Then mountain Kings and others are even harder to find, and are more expensive! The grey banded baby I’m thinking about getting is the only one I’ve seen here ever and is selling for 250$...

Corns are found easily, and are quite cheap...About the same as the cheaper California kings and sometimes a bit less.
Other snakes are generally OK priced and can be found if you look for them.. Baby normal boas (common) go for about 70 - 80$ while dumerils go for about 380 - 500$ for babies.

The only thing I HATE about keeping herps in this province I’m in is that you need permits to transport your reptiles from place to place and need permits to keep them too... Its more of a hassle than anything else.
