 Why didn’t she let go.

Well a few days ago we finally fed Gizmo. She hadn’t really eaten for about 3 weeks so we fed her rat pups. The first she ate fine. But the second rat pup went in and when Gizmo went to strike at this rat pup she instead bit her tail. She began to coil around herself like she had the rat. The rat began to (as Jim Morrison said) "Ride the snake" and Gizmo was still clamped onto her tail. It worried me quite a bit because she would not let go and this rat was just jumping all over her. Finally I called my dad to help because I had no idea what to do. He ended up using his lighter to pull her off herself (not lit of course it was to push her away from her tail). I looked at her tail last night and she has some dried up blood on her and you can see bite marks left from her teeth. If I can I will post some pictures on this.

If you could give me some idea as to why she wouldn’t let go of herself that would be great.

I honestly think that sometimes snakes are just not as intelligent as we would like to believe. I’ve seen them do crazy stuff like that before. I think your snake was probably so lathered up about a meal that it just didn’t realize what it was doing! I’m sure it would have figured it out eventually. :)

Kingsnakes have such an aggressive feeding response that once the lock in on a food item anything that moves gets nailed!! Yours missed the rat grabbed it’s own tail but did not realize it. The rat kept struggling wich is a signal to the snake to keep constricting (until it dies). Snakes also have very poor pain receptors wich is why he didn’t notice his own teeth sunk into his tail...

Could this badly injure her in any way? I asked someone at school and they said her tail could fall off. Could that really happen to my baby?

Thanks guys for the imput.

How badly did it chew on itself? I’m sure that if you just apply some neosporin ointment or diluted iodine to it for a few days, it should heal nicely. That is, if most of the tail is still hanging on! :-)

She didn’t chew it up too bad. It is still there but you can see where her teeth sunk in.
But thankyou everyone for the help you have given me.
