 New Desert King Snake--need advice

I was going to get a Corn Snake as an easy "first snake" for my 6 year old son and me but my neighbor was giving away a Desert King Snake so I took that instead. The tank came with a UTH and 2 nice hides and the snake is just now coming out of brumation so we won’t get to feed it for a little while, although we hear he is a good eater. The water dish that came with it is not large enough for the snake to submerge in. My neighbor says it’s not necessary but the research I did on Corns said they really need it, especially for shedding. Should I go get a larger water dish?? He also said they’re not big climbers. So no branch necessary?

sometimes kings like to completly submerge in their water bowl b/4 and after sheding and it’s important to allow them the option to soak.

Right on. Thanks for your help. We’ll get a larger water dish and skip the branch.

you’re welcome weecreekers,
btw i don’t use hides either, my kingsnakes get all the security they want burrowing in their shavings.

That’s interesting. Do you use aspen bedding? And how deep is deep enough? (My snake is roughly 3 feet long.) And that brings me to another question, what’s the best way to measure a snake??

I use aspen, but L Roy(Jetzen) will tell you he uses pine. I also use hides in some of my tubs, but not in all. It’s entirely up to you. I use about 2-3 inches of shavings. There is a thing you can download called the Serpentwidget or something like that. If you take a picture of your snake with a ruler or something in the pic, you can put it in the program to accurately measure. I’ve never tried it, though, I just use an estimate.
Here’s the link:

Branches are more for fun though I have seen my king climbing on them and such at night, but it’s usually to try and get at the lid of the tank so see if she can find a way out.

weecreekers,
i like pine shavings best, the pine i use is soft and fluffy. and i go 2 times the snakes dia., example: a snake that is 1" dia. gets shavings 2" deep.

Butch and Bertha are shaving hogs, and only get 2.5-3"s of shavings,
today i’m gonna try to take pics of Bertha and her girlfriend Guida.

I heard evil things about pine shavings. But obviously your snakes are just fine.

My son was going to name him "King Snake" (because he’s six and it would go perfectly with "Lizardy" the Emerald Swift) but I started showing him photos of other snakes in this forum and telling him all the names. Today I heard him say to a friend on the phone, "Snakes have to have cool names". That doesn’t mean we’ve come up with one yet but at least we’re heading in the right direction!

i hope you don’t feed that snake on that substrate. if it accidently ingests enuff of those slivers it will die a slow and lingering death.
substrate like that may be non-toxic but deadly just the same.

I plan to change to aspen soon and definitely before I feed him. I think that might be cypress?? Will aspen be alright for feeding him because I don’t have another place to do it. I get the impression that some people feed their snakes in a separate area altogether.

aspen is better than cypress but not as good as soft fluffy pine, a separate feeding container is a good way to go.

I should probably consult a care sheet by now and stop wasting your time but I am so new at this. When it comes time for feeding, if I use a separate container, how long is too long in terms of the snake not being interested in eating and needing to get back to it’s tank? Do you bring their water dish over to the feeding container, too? What was that container your snake was in?

When I take mine out to feed, I put them in a plastic Sterilite with some holes and a lid. If they don’t show interest in the food within the time they usually do (they all vary), I take them out and try again in a few days. You can put them right back in their home after they eat, I usually clean their tub and give fresh water while I’m feeding.

i gave up on caresheets a long time ago, i found too many to be full of bogus info, maybe they were written by newbs.

yes, if you use a feeding container then it’s easier to scoop the poop when they’re eating.

Cool, then I won’t mind bothering you all from time to time. The snake finally has a halfway decent name. We decided to go for something Egyptian and that quickly turned into "Pyramid". I was going for Pharoah but my son is the true owner here. So Pyramid it is!
