 Biting Question...

The other day was feeding day. I usually feed my snakes in different containers than their habitats. So I went to pick up my very tiny high-white cal king and she latched onto my finger. It didn’t hurt (she’s SOOOO small) and I didn’t panic... but she wrapped around my finger and held on as if it was a struggling pinky/fuzzy. Not wanting to hurt her, I tried everything I could to get her off (short of ripping her teeth out). She was on there for about 20 minutes. I called someone and they said to use my thumbnail from my other hand and try to pry her off my finger with it. It worked and neither the snake nor I was hurt and she ate two fuzzies.

I’d like to know if this has happened to anyone with their kings and what method you used to get that king snake off of you.

Thanks in advance for your response!

Fred

 Biting Question...

My Cali King latched onto me a while back. I used a q-tip dipped in vinegar and rubbed gently on her snout. She wasn’t too slow in letting go.

 Biting Question...

Hey there Thunderer,

Yes, I had that happen to me too with my, at the time, little King, Eekus. I was trying out handfeeding, a la L. Roy. Eekus has the typical nitrous charged feeding response. And he got the wrong pinkie. His teeth were so small it didnt break the skin, and he wrapped up his ’victim’, giving it his all. It was just too funny. I just sat down and held still, he eventually started to loosen up. I wiggled my pinkie again and he went back to constricting. Eventually, he gave up and I gave him the right pinkie. Here is a pic of the festivities.

Thanks for the replies!

Fergie - I didn’t even think to try vinegar... maybe that’ll be a last resort thing though. LOL.

DuckMonster - That pic looks oh, so familiar! I’m having flashbacks. LOL. I completely understand waiting until it let go. I wanted to do the same, but we were in a hurry and I didn’t think feeding her would "take so long".

Anyway, if she does it again (and I hope not), I’ll try to have more time to spend with her.

Anyone else?

The whiff of vinegar is usually enough for them to let go plus i don’t think it will do them any harm.

From the pic below, she was latched on for a good twenty minutes or more and it was actually quite painful. I tried misting her, alcohol and the only thing that made her release was the vinegar. Others say to run their head under water but thats too risky in my opinion

Wow. She’s much bigger than the little king I’ve got. I can actually see the red from the bite in that pic (bleeding?).

 Biting Question...

I just got a Mex. Black KIng Snake yesterday. This is my first snake ever and I have only fed it once. Everything is great with it, the only prob is it wont let us handle it. Do you think the snake is scared still. Its only 10 inces long.

 Biting Question...

When I first obtained my California king in May, she was wild and about 12 to 14 inches long, and all bit up by the cat. Naturally she was absolutely terrified of being handled, and would rattle her tail and try to escape. Now she is a big almost 19 inches, and when I pick her up from under her hide, she is calm and relaxed. It just takes awhile for them to gain faith that they will not be on the menu. A good time to try picking them up is when they are cool, as they are less prone to be zippy and try to escape, but will instead sit in your hand for the warmth.

I think we’ve all had "those" moments, and pics to show for it! We dip a q-tip in alcohol. A tiny touch to the corner of the mouth makes them release quickly.

 Biting Question...

Q-tip dipped in vinegar or alcohol works wonders (as the others have vouched for). I had our 6 ft. Red Tail Boa miss the rat and grab my hand once. I wish I had known these tricks back then! It took 15 minutes of online searching (with her trying to turn my fingers blue) before I had the answer. A little alcohol in the mouth did the job! :)

No, Tequila!
Seriously, I’d go with a grain alcohol, not rubbing alcohol.

Poisonous!

Not poisonous! Also, after one has pried a snake off one’s hand, a stiff drink may well be in order!

I do use rubbing alcohol, but not enough to get any in the snake’s mouth. If the q-tip barely touches the side of the mouth, they let go. I’d NEVER pour alcohol into the mouth (as I’ve heard about others doing).

 Biting Question...

i have had my cali king bite me a few times and i think i put my fingers on each side of his jaw and squeezed, didnt like doing that cause i felt like i would break it but he let go and no one was hurt.lol Luckily he has since stopped that.but i have heard that alcohol and vinegar and if you use hot tap water they will let go to,not on the head even just on their body.

since i’ve been bit a bazillion times i’ve had the chance to try everything, what i like the best is listerene or any other very strong mouthwash and i have a bottle handy in my snakeroom at all times.
