hi hatchet,
hi candy,
they are Louisiana specks there’s only one other speck i like better and that’s the texas specks with the intense orange-yellow bellies.
this is the third time i tried to breed these two, hope it works this time but it’s still fun to watch them enjoy life.

Great photos! I’ve saved the ...ahem...most graphic one to my hard drive, for future Photoshop amusement!
Those are really pretty snakes; they look like they have been rolled in gold flakes.

Congrats Jetzen!!! I’ve been contemplating trying Sky and Champ again. Between the both of us I think we got 6 months covered for breeding. I’ve done the easy ones with March, April and May, and you have January, Feb?, and now Aug. I’ll try my 2 again next month see if I can get Sept!!! LOL

With the way golds gone up in price the last few months, those 2 are worth a mint by now!!!! LOL

hi my friends,
TDK, i prefer to use a portable baseboard heater for my snakeroom.
but i am set up with flexwatt too (6 watt 3 inch) availible from Big Apple, that i mostly use in the winter .

The main thing that prevents me from getting any more snakes right now is power consumption. I am not on the grid, I have solar and battery banks and gas generator, and can only produce so much wattage in the dead of winter at 3200 foot elevation, to keep everybody warm and happy. If I had power from the grid...I’d have knoblochis and mali uromastyx and horny toads and all sorts of other critters...sigh...
But I will stick with my three king snakes, 9 fence lizards (and possibly 16 more if all the eggs hatch!), my mice and crickets and all my cats, too embarrassing to mention how many of those I have! At least the cats don’t need special UVB and heat lamps, which I will provide for my fencies when it gets chilly and I can’t put their cages in the sun.

thing that keeps us from getting more is money and space right now.We dont have a rack set up and just tanks so with 9 snakes it gets a little crowded, lol. I would like to get a rack for them but then we cant see them as well so until we find or make one with clear tubs they stay in glass tanks.hehe.But hey if we lived in Oregon we would have more of Lroys snakes, lol.

I am considering getting this book. I have my snakes in glass tanks, too, as I like to see them. I suppose one could make a standard plastic tub rack, then cut the front out of the tub, and mount clear Plexiglas onto it with glue and screws.

racks & tubs are the way to go and tubs are so much easier to wash.
i’d never go back to aquariums.

I used to keep all mine in tanks too. They took up most of the living room and some of the bedroom. My wife was overjoyed when I decided to build a rack to condense the space they took up. I put them in my basement to boot, so they were "out of her way". LOL
I do still have 2 50 gallons set up that I use as my "maternity ward" because my tubs are too low for their layboxes. ;)

i learned the benefit of having tubs with lids by having many many many psycho ratsnakes milksnakes and some kingsnakes that go ballistic when their tubs are slid out and then they come flying out and land on the floor if there’s not a lid on their tub to contain them.
lids are the way to go and many snakekeepers are now building racks to accomedate lids.

lidless tub and rack systems are great for balls and boas but not for psycho colubrids, i know from experience.

I am exploring the idea of building a rack system like with the slide out tubs, only using my glass tanks instead of plastic tubs. I really want to be able to see my pets, without having to get up and go open the container. If the tanks are on slide-out platforms with space at the top for lights (for the lizards) and already have the locking lids, I just need to figure out the sliding platform the tank would sit on, which would slide back into the rack like a flat drawer.

Lampro,
yes i’ve done the coldest month and that makes me realize that breeding getula all year round is possible w/o brumation.
but i have had 0 success with the mexicana complex but that’s allright anyway because i am slowly phasing out all my mex-mex, thayeri, alterna, etc.
good luck with Sky & Champ, will their babies be some of each phase? or just normal hets? or some of all three phases? oh wait that’s how ghosts are produced so i guess there maybe four different phases there, lol!, i don’t know! i’ll just have to wait and see what happens, lol.

They should be double hets, axanthic + hypo, unless one or the other carry a trait I’m not aware of. I’ve had these 2 together over 10 times since last year, and have yet to get any eggs from them. Sky seems to resist him whenever I put them together (righteous little girl I guess). Breeding the double hets together SHOULD give me a ghost (1/16 chance by the numbers), and both hypos and axanthics.
From one of the MANY failed breeding attempts with these 2.........
