Too Late for Baby Gopher Snake!

I was out by the swimming pool and found a poor little dead gopher snake that one of the cats had just killed. At first I thought it was alive, but then upon closer inspection disappointment set in. I would LOVE to obtain a hatchling gopher snake. Alive, that is. Oh well, it made a welcome meal for my other snakes, divided up amongst them. I am all out of ft pinkies, don’t get my shipment until next Wednesday, and my pregnant mice have not yet given birth, so this is of some value even though it really bummed me out that the little snake got killed.

That’s sad, but at least it wasn’t one of your snakes.

greatballz,
look around the area where you found the dead one you may find a live one yet, if i lived in the snake country you do then i’d toss some sheets of plywood around or tin sheets -guarenteed to attract all kinds of reptiles ,small rodents. interesting bugs you name it.

AND they would be protected from them CATS!

L.Roy,
Good Idea on the plywood and tin. I will scatter some more of this around outside my fence, where one of the cats goes over to hunt. All the other cats stay in the fenced enclosure but this one cat is incorrigible; I would like to feed her to the python I currently do not own! The woods are bone dry and the little critters are migrating to my front garden in the porch area for water, more so than in any previous years. I have caught a couple of hatchling fence lizards the same age as my captive hatchlings on the fence gate, which I have added to the baby lizard tub.
I do have an extensive plywood and scrap wood set up all around my work shop just for the purpose of attracting reptiles and giving them a place to hide from the predators. But there is no water or moist ground at the shop, unlike my garden, which must look like an oasis in paradise to these drought stricken creatures. Unfortunately for them it is full of cats! At least with the cats I never have a rodent problem (except for the one field mouse awhile back who was brought into the house by a cat and escaped! Never did catch it.)

I usually just find rattlesnakes of various sizes. One time I was hiking up a steep trail from the river canyon and encountered a big old rattler on the trail. He got startled when he saw me and tried to get off the path, but lost his "footing" and rolled down the trail hissing and buzzing like a mad thing, really angry. He rolled right by me as I stepped off the trail. He looked embarrassed! It was really funny!
