Just another photo of my 07 California king. He is just the basic wild edition, although he has become quite tame since I got him in May ’08. He likes to eat only about every ten days to two weeks, so he is not real big.
In fact, I have a couple of 08 pyros that are bigger than him.

He is a sweet little guy, and even though I have considered releasing him back into the wild, he is still here in my best tank. He didn’t do so well on his own, anyway, having almost become lunch for one of my cats before I rescued him.

How did you tame it? I’m too scared to pick up mine O_O Looks exactly like yours, but more white and I think thinner...

I just kept picking him up in spite of his initial feinting and tail buzzing. He was understandably terrified when I rescued him from the jaws of death, but after a few episodes of being handled realized no harm was coming, and relaxed.

Pick the snake up by sliding your fingers under it’s middle. If it slithers out of your hand before you can lift it, don’t squeeze it, just try again. Once you’ve successfully picked it up let it glide from hand to hand and check you out. Never try to restrain it by hanging onto it; that will panic the poor thing.

It’s also a good idea to approach your snake from alongside, and not from above. They feel a lot less threatened that way. Also, if you really that nervous, you could wear a thin cotton glove which would protect you from the possible tiny pin pricks he might inflict on you. More for your benefit than your snake, to keep you from jumping if he should strike at you. After you’ve handled him once though, you (and he) won’t be scared the second time.
Good luck.

That’s okay. You have kept this thread alive with a very interesting topic. Handling snakes properly to condition them to trust us is important.

I just reach in and grab Samantha, my cali king, any time. She’s always very tame to handling. She will even eat mice while I’m holding her with no problem at all. I can pick her up while she’s eating, sleeping, hanging out, she doesn’t care.

Probably just because I’ve always handled her frequently even as a hatchling.
