 PERFECT TERRARIUM????

King snakes are cannibals ...one of the things on their diet are other snakes ! You must have seperate enclosures for each one... read the care sheets ...read the threads that are here.... Use the SEARCH button to find previously typed answers.

It makes a lot of folks kinda pissed if you don’t take the effort to do some of your own homework. Pay your dues. Earn your stripes... we can help with left out details or steer you back on a course you choose....

Tell us what size snake you are getting...that is a good place to start.

 PERFECT TERRARIUM????

For one, I know all about kings, Ive owned them before, I also have several tanks for all of my snakes, thats why I said THIER (plural), I just wanted other peoples opinions and ideas on what they think would be a good setup to keep them stimulated and healthy, and what they prefer themselves. I dont think I need to pay dues or earn stripes for someones opinion! My two new kings will be neonates, got any more usefull suggestions?

 PERFECT TERRARIUM????

Another shot of my Cali king in his tank. This tank is about 30 inches long. He really loves the driftwood. I try to give them interesting hidey holes and climbing spots.

I’m not too likely to get annoyed with newbie questions, or questions from more experienced keepers of reptiles. The only dumb question is the question not answered.

I never meant to offend ...I apologize if I did... just have seen so much ridicule/criticism around the forums previously , was trying to save you from it.

One thig that surprises me the most is how all snakes utilize a humid hide and enjoy it, especially during the shedding process. Often times a water bowl is ignored and with dry substrates humidity is very low ...about 17-25% here in Utah.

GBF has some great images and explanations of humid hides both here and in the gopher / bull snake areas.
If that appeals to you I would suggest that highly...

my apologies once again...I will have to consider my words more carefully.

 PERFECT TERRARIUM????

cphill58,
Thanks for the positive comments on my moss hide things. All my snakes just totally love them. Even my fence lizards enjoy a modified version; moist moss in the cake pan their water bowl is nested in. Every day they must have some sort of party at the water bowl, as the bowl gets full of moss and has to be changed daily.

I said the thing about the question wrong; it should have been the only dumb question is the question not asked, not the question not answered. LOL!

I don’t know if it’s just me ...or if I have a thick skin...but I can hang here no matter the words written...
If I question the context and attitude of the responder , I will ask first if they want to dance. If it is harmless... I will LOL with them.

I think I’m gonna join the party at the water bowl ....LOL Isure miss my native CA. lizards, shoulda brought 1/2 a dozen with me to Utah.

the next season produced youngins

Thanks for the input. I dont think you can judge someones attitude through type, but you can by what they write Cp....but thanks for the apology anyway ....So is the driftwood you put in your tank found just outside somewhere? If so, are you worried about mites or parasites?

 PERFECT TERRARIUM????

How I clean a big piece of driftwood or bark, or any other interesting wood product I scavenge from outdoors:
1. Fill a big tub with enough water to submerge the item. Add Clorox; a pint to five gallons of water seems to work well.
2. Leave the item soak for a couple of days. Take it out and rinse it well, then air dry it in the sun. To rinse it, put it in fresh water and give it another soak.
3. If the item will fit in your oven you can bake it at 320 degrees Fahrenheit for a half hour. Obviously my big piece of driftwood would not fit in my oven, hence the Clorox treatment.

I don’t use any pesticides on the wood as that would possibly damage the crickets I feed to my lizards, and might even hurt the lizards. This is not an issue for snakes except that the snakes do like to crawl on the wood and residual pesticides might hurt them, too.

Thanks, I think my new grey banded will love to have something to climb on, and I can keep him parasite free!

 He’s adjusting well.

Some of my Sterilite tubs:

Last night I put together new new tubs for my Arizona Mt. kings. At a little over a year old they had exceeded the length of their 10 gallon tanks. These are 105 quart Sterilite tubs, heated with Zoomed mini 4 watt UTH’s, for a hot spot under one of the hides. I believe in giving them as much room as possible; but have not found the right professional habitats at a price that I can afford, hence the Sterilite tubs. My pituophis are all in 105’s, and are comfortable, although at the rate pituophis grow, another larger size is in the near future!

After they were introduced into their new roomier homes they spent quite some time checking it all out, and stretching out their full length, something they had become unable to do in the ten gallon tanks. I could have used less tall tubs but I am claustrophobic, and wanted the snakes to have some vertical space as well. Also with the extra height I can add interesting logs and other objects. The tubs are easy to move around, too.

So to answer your question, yes ,he should be fine in a ten gallon for a year, but then you may need to upgrade to something bigger.

Your UTH’s dont melt the plastic?? Ive been wanting to build a rack now, but I figure it would be easier to just buy one. It would be about the same price and they install the heat tape for free.

The little 4 watt Zoomed min UTH is the only one safe for plastic. Also I use a thermostat to control the temperature, and have indoor-outdoor thermometer probes attached over the UTH area to monitor the heat. I’ve been using these things for quite a while with no problems. I only turn the thermostat up to 90 Fahrenheit tops. The snakes can lay over it with a light layer of bedding. I’m only keeping temperate climate reptiles mostly native to my area, so don’t need to duplicate tropical or desert conditions.

Eventually my snakes will reproduce, and I will buy a rack setup for the babies.
