 First snake.

I got a California kingsnake today. I read a little about it and it says that It only needs a small heat pad next to the hide. It also says I don’t need any specific humidity. I have the feeling that they are wrong. Does anyone know what the temperature and humidity should be? Also, I noticed that he likes to dig quite a lot. If he digs under the hide where the heat pad is will it burn him? If so, what can I put there so he wont get burned? I am using a 10 gallon glass tank to keep him in. The snake is about 1.5-2 feet long. I am not positive but I think it is a male. Any ideas?

 First snake.

Well, first off, he needs a bigger tank. A 10 gallon is too short.

My Cali king in his tank, which is 30 in long by 10 in wide by 15 in tall ( a weird size I got at a yard sale, but it serves his needs well). My snake is about the same size as yours. I put a lot of interesting rocks and bark and log for him to crawl around on and under, and deep aspen, as he likes to burrow. His moss hide is under the pile of stuff in this photo.
I use Zoomed UTH’s for my Cali. I set the thermostat to low, giving him a 75 to 85 degree warm spot. He likes to burrow down through the aspen and lay right on top of the UTH on occasion, but it has never hurt him. I use an indoor-outdoor thermometer with the outdoor probe right on top of the UTH to measure exactly the heat there. For humidity I give my snakes sphagnum moss hides (helps with shedding) and a large water bowl. The humidity is about 50 to 60.

What the moss hide looks like. This is one of my gopher snakes in her moss hide. All my snakes get these, and they love them.

 First snake.

I was told that at the shop, he was eating a pinkie once a week. Do you think I should keep him on that diet? I will see if I can get a picture of him later.

 First snake.

He looks like a florida king to me, and could probably be moved up to small-medium fuzzies

 First snake.

Thats what I thought he was at first too, but the shop insisted that it wasn’t. I ended up giving him two pinkies Sunday. I will try getting him a fuzzy this time.
