 Rubbermaids

I am thinking about getting a rubbermaid and putting my desert king snake in that. They seem pretty cheap and convenient to have, so is it a good idea to get one? What are some of the bad things and what are some good things about them. My brother got one and doesn’t have a snake in it yet. He got one that is about 1 1/2 feet long, 1 foot high, and about 1 foot deep. Would that bee good enough for a 2 foot long desert king? Also, I was going to get a uth for it. Will they melt the plastic if I use them?

Rubbermaid bins are just fine for king snakes. You just need to make sure it can be securely shut because they are little Houdinis, and that you can achieve the proper heat gradient for your snake.

An UTH won’t melt the plastic, I use a tub heated with an UTH for my blood python and it is perfectly fine.

You can use a bin of that size now, but you’ll have to upgrade to something larger soon. A general rule of thumb for enclosure size is that it should be long enough that the snake can stretch its entire length across the length of the the enclosure, and then down one side of it. For a young snake like you have it’s more important not to go too large than it is to be a little on the small side; young snakes do better in snug enclosures that they can feel safe in.

Also make sure to drill quite a few ventilation holes. King snakes don’t do well in stagnant or too humid an environment.
