How do I get my snake out of his hide-out?

I just got a few month old California King snake. He seems happy and healthy. I don’t however know if I should stick my hand in his hide out when I want to pick him up..? I got him a cool fake log to hide in at a pet shop, it has two openings and both are large enough to stick my hand in...I don’t think he is going to come out on his own, since I read they are pretty shy..and like to hide alot. What should I do...

My cali-king is also a little shy but the longer i’ve had it the more active he gets. I bought him a hide cave which was a bit too big and he never came out. I could hear him moving around in it and he’d pop his head out every now and again but would stay in there. I’ve since bought him a smaller one which has plenty of room in it but is only about 5 inches wide and about 10inches long and hes much more active outside it now. Try waving his food outside one of the entrances for a few seconds and then put it at the opposite end of the tank so he can smell the food but has to explore the tank to find it. This way he’ll get used to the tank and its surroundings. I wouldnt recomend putting your hand in there cos if its nervous it might bite.

I do not own a kingsnake (yet) but own a corn snake and a ball python. First, I’d recommend that you wait until your snake is out of his hide before handling it (unless you want to take it to the vet). More importantly, if your hand fits in your shelter for a baby kingsnake, then its shelter is way too big! Snakes like it tight and snug. Once it has shelters (one in the hot area and another in the cool area) that feel more secure, your snake will be less stressed and more willing to come out. A humidity shelter is cheap and a good idea to help shedding.

I agree with Whitehorse. The hide box is too big for a baby king if you can reach your hand in it. Also, you don’t want to ever take your snake out of his hide box (unless you’re taking it to the vet like whitehorse metioned)because that’s the snake’s safe haven. The snake should feel comfortable and secure from the world in his hide box. If you take him out of it all the time then the snake will feel less secure. As the snake matures he should get more active. My king hardly ever goes inside his hide box.

How do I get my snake out of his hide-out?

I’ve just bought a Cal Kingsnake (its only a baby) and mine always goes into her hide out and if she is not in there then she is burrowing under the bedding I have in the tank, but once night time comes around shes out and about exploring every part of the tank. I think when the snake is ready to make an appearence he will, I wouldn’t recommend putting your hand in its hide hole or it may bite if it feels threatend or nervous.

i had that same problem with my ball python. if he wont come out on his own at all then force him out. just pic up the log and slide him out of it. definitly be careful tho so u dont do anythin to hurt him. but then just pic him up. when snakes are young it is better to hold them as much as u can so they can get comfortable with people. but if u dont start holdin him he will be scared of people all his life and wont ever let u pic him up.

My king was also a little shy. If i came into the room and he was out of his hide he was ok but if he was just poking his head out or was only half out he would scurry back in straight away.
My room is a bit dark but i got a new tank the other day with a light in the top of it. Its got the same set up in it but i’ve put a black backing pic in it(to show up his albino colours) and hes much more active. Maybe the tank/room is too dark for him??
