well, i have an update on my komodo...the local animal shelter called and told me to come and pick it up (my#was on his tags). i guess he caused quite a ruckus in town last night b/c now i have a huge bill for damages. let me see...he caused a 4 car pile-up, tore out a street lamp, chased a little old lady down the street. theres more, but i wont go into that .

Komodo dragons are real dragons. They are similar to monitors, but they have a few differences. As food is broken down in their stomach, the methane that is produced is carried to special glands in the throat. These glands then can be emptied through tubes under the dragons tongue. The dragon’s methane is different from the methane released by other animals. Certain properties cause it to ignite when it comes in contact with oxygen. Large male komodo dragons in the wild can release up to three burst that last 3 to 5 seconds. The glands are removed in zoo animals due to the danger of fire breathing.

One Komodo in a London zoo was overlooked in 1963 and did not have the methane glands removed. It killed another Komodo dragon male that was after one of the females. A zoo keeper suffered third degree burns during the capture of the large dragon. Sadly the dragon was put down before the methanectomy could be performed.

Other differences between dragons and monitors are size, number of toes on the front feet, and dorsal scale count.

I hope this clears up the confusion of dragons and monitors.

Here is a picture of one of my rescues. The picture is of a 6 month old komodo shortly after the methanectomy.

not only are snakes not poisonous, they are venomous, komodo dragons do have primitive venom glands, like a few other species of monitor, bearded dragons, and even iguanas. do some bloody research before you hit post, especially after the title of your topic. look up the work of dr fry and please, for the love of the world, stay in school, kiddo.

heres a bit of history about the name.

Komodo stands for King in old times and
Dragon stands for Lizard in midevil times

so yes they did call all lizzards or reptiles dragons, so if that was true an snake would be a dragon...

however in modern days it would be *King Dragon* or *King Lizzard*
and put it in english you get *King of the Lizzards*

I know almost everything a bout the Komodo Dragon, i have learned almost everything there is to know a bout them. i am not calling you an idiot or anything because in all re-ality if this was Midevil days then *Yes they would be dragons*
and some people still call lizzards dragons, so there for yes they are dragons but it all depends on how you look at it, and all i am saying is.

Know your meanings.
