In Australia if you cannot get it legally (CBB native specie)

You cannot get it, simple, this is important to Australia to prevent invasive species.

Are certain monitors not allowed in Australia? Like suppose I were to move there, would I not be able to own a blackthroat monitor? (just using it as an example...)

 Most probably not..

The animal would have to go through quarantine, be parasite free, etc, they do not want invasive species that cause problems for their native wildlife. Especially a country where the top predators in almost every niche are monitors, they probably would not allow it in the country at all. Yet sheep, goats, cattle, dogs, and cats, etc are readily available as pets and livestock. You would have to settle for buying a CBB Aussie species, and earning the exotics permits in order to get a reptile. They have a permit that you have to get that allows small, harmless lizards, etc which you must then prove in a period of time that you can keep them properly to be able to get the next level of permit that allows you to get a monitor (level 2). Their laws are a bit more to protect the animals from those who would buy them as a passing fad, you must earn you way to ownership of them.

 Ask your local authorities..

Or write to those who represent you, your national government and get copies of the laws to better understand it.

If i went to madagascar and bought or found a chameleon, which i would never get one out of the wild only captive breed ones for me, and brought it back to Australia what would happen to the chameleon would i be able to take it through customs or would they take it off me?

So is there a way i can get a chameleon into Australia can’t they just quarantine it and all that stuff?

And can you bring other animals in if it’s for educational purpose say if i was a herpitologist and wanted to study them could i bring a few in a study them?
Thanks

Being a herpetologist entitles you to all kinds of special licensing which allow you to own exotic reptiles that a normal person couldn’t own. You could still probably get a chameleon with a lvl 2 license if you had government permission and had a good record of taking care of your lizards.

They would take it off you and unless the zoo was short on chameleons would destroy it on the spot.

This country is full of fantastic reptiles, why would you want to risk bringing in diseases by importing a reptile from elsewhere. Get yourself something local or move overseas.

Getting a Komodo Dragon into the country would be easy.
Just put some steak sauce on the customs inspector.
