 Cincinnati Zoo Komodo

I went to the zoo in Cincy last weekend and was really excited about seeing their komodo but when I got there I was majorly disappointed. His enclosure seemed too small to me. Don’t komodos like to travel and forage? When speaking with the "meet the keeper" person they seemed very uninterested in this animal, it sounded like he was "tossed scraps" like a stray dog. Such a beautiful animal to be wasting away from there.....

The AZA very doubtfully will do anything about it, they’re an extremely busy organization and to try and deal with one zoo’s exhibit is not on their list of things to do, nor will they take away cinci’s accredidation simply for one reptile exhibit that might be too small. The zoo might take suggestions into account, who knows.

I know for a fact that the Cincinnati Zoo needs to do a major overhaul on all of its reptile exhibits. I live very close to it and go there all the time. So possibly a report saying that all of the reptile exhibits there need to be upgraded would draw some attention to the matter. The reptile house is very small as well are the exhibits in it. They had a about 4 foot white throat in a cage with gravel substrate, a bowl of water, nowhere to hide and to top it off the cage couldnt have been bigger then 2 feet wide, 3 feet deep, and about 3 feet tall. Its sad what some zoos do to animals.

if that does not work your next bet is to send pics to local herp societies and animal cruelty police. do what ever it takes to be heard.

I agree. It was just a pathetic attempt to get as many exhibits into that tiny building asd possible. Those animals deserve better. I wish I could get a job as a keeper for the reptile house. I’d love to work with the croc monitor they have. He’s such a beauty!
