it doesnt matter since *you* can’t. and, if you were in a unique situation where you could, you would know how.

Actually there’s this indonesian guy who plays around with huge komodo dragons (and pythons) straight out of the jungle. He posted some pics on another site. It’s so cool, imagine walking around with your own monster. One of these days he will be eaten, i’m sure. LOL

I can just imagine, instead of Grizzly man, It will be Komodo man, a man tragically eaten by those he loved. I’d pay to see that.

Where can you get Komodo dragons?

water monitors aren’t the longest. Look here v

Crocodile Monitor

Scientific name: Varanus salvadori
Family: Varandae
Order: Squamata
Class: Reptilia
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Crocodile monitors may grow to a maximum length of 12 feet from head to the tip of its tail; and is currently recognized as the longest lizard in the world. Like all other monitor lizards of the Varandae family, the crocodile monitor can be distinguished by it’s long thin forked tongue; the only other reptiles to share this common trait are snakes. It possess long sharp teeth, which enables it to easily hold its prey within its mouth while climbing up and down trees. Crocodile monitors also have 5 strongly clawed digits on its 4 appendages.
Its smooth skin is sought after by natives of Papua New Guinea, for the skin of Kundu Drums. Its head and neck are long, and are both covered by overlapping polygonal shaped scales. The crocodile monitor also has a particularly long and sturdy tail that may be aptly used in self-defense.

The skin of the crocodile monitor is predominately black covered with white specks or dots on its body. The most distinguishable aspect of this lizard, apart from other members of the Varandae family; is its exceptionally long and sleek body.

DISTRIBUTION and HABITAT:
The crocodile monitor is found exclusively in Papua New Guinea. It is a rather docile animal which is easily domesticated and may be kept around the world as a household pet. In its natural habitat, as a tree dweller, the Salvadori monitor may be found in the upper jungle canopies of Papua New Guinea.
BEHAVIOR:

Crocodile monitor meets some Zoo volunteers

Despite the crocodile monitor’s docile demeanor, it should not be mistaken as a harmless animal. Its powerful tail can inflict considerable damage. Amongst the tribes people of New Guinea, the crocodile monitor is greatly feared, as they believe the lizards to be man-eaters.
Like other animals who live in trees in their natural habitat, the Salvadori monitor is quite alert and other times flighty. Like most other Monitor Lizards, the Salvadori monitor prefers to evacuate the area in caution rather than confront a threat. Despite the Salvadori monitor’s docile demeanor, do not mistake it as being a harmless animal, with its powerful tail the Salvadori monitor may inflict considerable damage.

DIET:
Within its natural habitat, the Salvadori monitor feeds mostly on carrion and other small reptiles; but outside of its habitat as a pet it may eat mice, rats and fowl.
REPRODUCTION:
The crocodile monitor reproduces by laying eggs.

In fair to ideal settings the Salvadori monitor’s life expectancy may range between 12 - 20 years. The Salvadori monitor, is rare, but not considered endangered, unlike some members of monitor lizards.

Wild Population: Unknown.

the web is wrong. most of the stuff of 12 foot croc monitors and 30 foot anacondas is bogus heresay.

the water monitor holds the record for longest 10’ 4"

Quote:

Robert Mertens listed it as 321 cm in his monograph "Mertensiella".

the komodo at 10’ 2"

then i am not sure if it is the perentie or croc monitor.

please name the books. the bigget i know of is a friend of sam sweet hereLink who do you know with 10 footers? where have you seen them? i keep monitors and know many people who do so i could check your references and books. make me a list and i will run it by the keepers.

zoos always misquote info. many believe anacondas get 37.5 feet when actually that was the measurement of a skin. the carcass measured 27.5 feet and was shot by bill lemar.

i will see what is up with that. i am sure people on the monitor forum know jason abels. it is probably just a publicity thing. it is very hard to get komodo dragons so advertising the world’s longest lizard will draw a big crowed.

I have no doubt that there are komodo dragons out there far bigger than 10’4’’. In fact, some of those specimens we see in documentaries are obviously over 11’ or even 12’. I can tell they are gigantic, YOU can tell they are gigantic... but is anyone gonna measure them instead of just film them around?? of course not. The record holder was a zoo specimen, not because there aren’t any bigger in the islands but because it’s just easier to control a captive dragon and actually get a number for the statistics.
I’m sure nobody ever even attempted to measure a wild big male from those islands.

I see what you are talking about. I’ve seen a crocodile monitor in a zoo that was at least 9 feet.

when you are a zoologist and field researcher you have no reason to lie. i do not believe he has seen that specimen but he would not lie. here is a quote from mark bayless another big name in monitor research.

Quote:

The Herpetological Collections made by Dr. Hugh M. Smith in Siam from 1923 to 1929. Proceedings of the United States National Museum 77(11):1-39:

She states that her guide has seen and measured V. salvator 248.5 cm (= 8.15 feet), another 1.5 m (5 feet), and a third observed that was 14 feet total length long!
Dr. Cochran was a trained Herpetologist, and new her job well, being a herpetologist for the Smithsonian Inst., you have to know your stuff! This latter specimen was not caught or photographed -

now reported and measured is to different things. as far as largest measured i would have to take michael’s word for it.
