About to purchase a Russian Glass Lizard

I’m very new to the forum and I have been reading a lot of the posts in here, but I do have a question that I hope can be answered or point me in the right direction....

I am about to purchase a very sweet Russian Glass Lizard and I am having a real hard time finding any real good information about the species or it’s habits.... I’ve got the basics, regarding housing, food, and temp. My question is, since they are from Russia do they hibernate, and how would one go about creating that type of scenario for the lizard, so his biorhythms stay as natural as possible? I would take a guess at playing with the heat lamps, but I do not want to make a major mistake here either... The Manager at Petsmart has been great and with a lot of information, I have been able to back up regarding this species. She too, has not been able to find out much concerning hibernation or even just general info on the species, other than the general care sheet the company puts out. I did a little research on the American Glass Lizard and it even said that they were more active from like May to September....

Any information would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
RD

Is your lizard a Scheltopusik (Ophisaurus apodus) ? I just got one last week from a local petshop. In a couple of weeks I’ll be getting 2 more. I have also had trouble finding information about them. Care sheets are hard to find. I have mine set up alomost the same as my Savannah Monitor. They don’t need a lot of humidity. I have a water dish big enough for it to get it’s entire body in. There is a hide box also. At one end of the cage I have a heat lamp with a 60 watt basking bulb. From what I have gathered from talking to people with experience is that they are easy to take care of and are very hardy. They really do not like to be handled (there are exceptions) but if you do they are not very quick to drop their tails but if it should happen the tails do grow back. Good Luck!

Hello,

Yes mine is a Sheltopusik O.A., I will be picking him up next week as well after I return to town. I am currently setting up house for his arrival... That must be a very big water dish LOL, this guy is about 3.5 feet long, I guess I better start looking around... I know what you mean about them not wanting to be handled. He just spins round and round when you first pick him up... Then he tends to settle down. He has been handled a lot though, so I am hoping that we get along great.... I really do appreciate your reply and congrats on getting three, let’s stay in touch and compare notes on bringing them into our respective families....

Good luck to you too...

Hello. Me again. My Schelty is about 30" long (mostly tail). I named it "Snizard". I haven’t figured out yet if it’s a boy or a girl. I like lizards but I only have 2. I’m mostly into snakes. I have 20 of them from all over the world. My most exotic one is probably my White Lipped-Python. I have several python and boa species as well as some colubrids including a False Water Cobra that I picked up a month ago. Reptiles really rock. My wife is the one who got me into Reptiles about 5 years ago. I am disabled and get to spend a lot of time with my animal friends. I also have 12 pet Rats, a Bunny, a Guinea Pig. and a young Gray Squirrel. I’m not sure of the market for Scheltopusiks but maybe down the road we could breed ours. I am currently waiting for my gravid Amazon Tree Boa to give birth. Probably in about a month in a half she’ll have them. Anyway if you have anymore questions I would be more than happy to answer them for you. G’Day and snake it easy.
