Leopard gecko Generally, if you get a Leopard Gecko at a pet store they will either inaccuratly sex it or won’t know the gender of it at all. I don’t have a preference between Males and Females, it depends on the personality of the gecko...each individual has its own personality. As far as a juvenile over adult, If I would have the option I would chose a juvenile, they are easier to tame from an early age rather than an adult. They will also get to know you more, and trust you. Can’t help on names. I never name a pet before i see him/her or they develop a unique personality.

Leopard gecko Funny enough, I’m opposite to Hacksaw. Adult would be a better choice, especially if this is your first gecko. Usually adults in pet stores (at least in the Petsmart locations I visit throughout the state) have been handled and they will let you handle the gecko if you ask politely. If they don’t, then you can be assured ahead of time that the gecko has probably never been handled much or at all. Juvis and hatchlings are more skiddish and freak out more easily - though the adult may be upset for the first few days home. Adults have more of a chance of being healthy upon purchase, since Juvis and hatchlings are still getting the immunities. Honestly, I believe juvis and hatchlings can get sicker more easily from stress than adults, same with getting impaction if improperly enclosed and getting ill from being tanked with new ones constantly.
You can find out the gender of an adult, especially if the pet store has made it handle-friendly - they’ll sex it for you. You cannot find out (easily) what gender hatchlings and juvi’s are.
Now don’t fret. The good side to getting a juvi is that it starts out small and grows with you, which means more bonding time. You get to see the progress from stripes to spots and all that. Juvis and hatchlings are also less expensive (for better or worse).

Leopard gecko You can also look at the billion leopard gecko caresheets out there, as they will tell you what you need. Be sure to look at more than one, as some are off.
Never use loose substrate or any calcium substrates thereof. You don’t need a UVB light, but you do need a source of heat. And you need a humid hide. The caresheets should cover the jist of what a humid hide is. Everything else you need is listed in caresheets.
