 Newbie Leopard Gecko Setup

I am looking to setup my first reptile tank and have some questions. My tank plan is a standard glass 10 gallon fish aquarium for one gecko. Playsand as the substrate; a couple of rocks similar to what is used in fish tanks; a hide; temp guage x 2 (one near the light source and one on the opposite end of the tank; water dish, & maybe a log of some kind or drift wood.

Q 1. What wattage bulb would I need to maintain the proper temp in a 10 gallon tank? My plan is to buy a exo tank light top that holds two bulbs so I can use one in the summer months and both in the winter with one being a night light for extra heat when the temps drop.

Q2. What is the best substrate to put in the hide?

Q3. Can a live plant left in a pot be placed in the tank?

Q4. Can some reptile power ( vitamins) be placed in the tank in a small jar lid for the gecko to lick as it wants?

Thats all the questions for now, I plan to setup everything first and go gecko shopping.

yes no sand they can eat it and get impacted

as for heating i prefer to use an under tank heater

you keep those on 24/7 so they always have heat on one side and it is cooler on the other side

they dont really need any lighting

i also would reccomend keeping a diah of pure calcium in the tank at all times

and as far as hides go you need at least 3

one on the warm side
one on the cool side
and a humid hide(you put damp paper towels or moss in there to keep it humid for them when they are shedding etc)

Thanks for the great tips, much appreciated. I will not use sand, many pics of gecko setups online have sand but I will take your advice and not use it.
