 I hate petstores.
Well my mother and I were at Jack’s aquarium and pets a second ago and this sales person was telling a little girl that for an adult leopard gecko it was going to cost her 150$ for the setup. She told her that sand was the best thing and then when i tried to set her right she told me off like I’m some little kid who knows nothing about my geckos. After all of this the manager had the audacity to tell me that 99% of leopard geckos won’t eat meal worms. I really wish people would adequately take care of their captives. Then there was this guy and he was telling me i was a bad person for keeping my reptiles, like they are better off in the wild. I calmly explained to him that the average life span for a wild gecko is less then 10 years while captive Leos can live for twenty plus years. His answer was to tell me that the gecko I’m trying to save was more intelligent than i am. Then they practically kick me out for making a scene. Some people are just absurd.

Yeah he was a idiot.I hope I can work at a Pet store soon for the sake of the animals the pet store I go to keep all their animals on bark....

i work at a petstore. its not there fault its the managers for not teachign and trainging there staff. i personaly thing my petstore is one of the best around for selection but even my staff a rusty on many things. new people come and old people go so fast in petstores(mine any ways) that you cant help it. if you notic some one working there lots and who knows what there doing then goto that person and ask for that person when your out at that store. i was lucky going into work at a petstore that i had prior experianc with leopard geckos-beardies to FBT and it made it easy but some people cant have that luxtury of owning every thing like some of us.
take it easy on staff, ask to see a manager and tear a chunk out of him because its his responsablility to have staff trained on there animals

What do you mean calm down????I have not ever Even the pet store you work in.I have seen pet stores that keep Iguanas and turtles together are you going to defend that pet store to????Or how about the pet store that kept a Panther chameleon in a 7/8 gallon AQUARIUM, Which can kill them from stress or how about the pet stores that sell animals to young??? Listen I am just saying not all pet stores are good and not all are bad.Oh and not their fault that they abuse animals I am not just talking about substrate I have been to pet stores where there are so many dead animals that you would be horrified.I also have seen a good many with the animals water is so old it is growing algae.
Now do not take this the wrong way there are plenty of people that work at Pet stores here and I mean no disrespect towards YOU personally, I am just stating Pet stores with Skeletons of dead animals in the tank because they have not cleaned it out in so long that is what gets me upset.Oh and take a look at this LINK.Notice the sand and the dead crickets that are to large????

though most pet stores are horrible beyond beleif the one i go to is pretty good, the employees are educated, their reptiles are well fed and given fresh water every day. no too badly cramped cages but not the best, no sand substrate, and the humidity is moistened every day. sure some of the things the employees say are bull smarty pants but no stores perfect

oh petco. where no one should go...especially me. i have yelling matches with the managers there. the other day i went in for supplies (the only place near me that carries plain calcium, and i ran out), and was checking everyone out. i should know better. besides the tiny tiny beardies and leos on sand looking half dead, i was checking out this millipede they had. suddenly, i noticed all the mites all over it. so i went to the reptile person, and said something about it, since i knew the mites could spread to every other tank they had in there on their special rack system. so, she says to me (and this may be true, i know nothing about those nasty things) "oh, yeah, i saw that too. i know it sounds weird, but they are completely necessary for the millipede to live. its something special about them. without them, he would die." ok, maybe its true, i dont know enough (nor do i care to learn enough about them) to know differently. BUT you would think that if you have an animal that has mites (necessary or not), you would not put it in a rack system with all the other reptiles for it to spread, dont you think? so she tells me they never leave the ugly thing, just stay on him all the time. so i asked her why i saw a bunch crawling on the log thing they have in there. she stared at me. i told her it might be a good idea for her to tell her manager about the situation, and to do a thorough cleaning of all the cages, and remove the thing from that system. of course, thats not an option, because where could they put it (her words)?
ive also been banned from the petstore across the street from them for arguing with the owner in front of customers at his busiest times of the day about the horrid care of his animals. no, i never did that at those specific times on purpose, i swear :-)

I just took a trip to petco....They had 3, 6 inch red foot torts in a 20 long and had them Iceburg lettuce with A little carrot mixed in with Poop all through the cage and a BUNCH mixed in with the crappy lettuce.Their Leos where OK and the BD was in a 20 long cage and seemed OK until I looked at the temp gauges and it read 80F on the hottest part of the BD cage and The sad part this was a BEAUTIFUL BD it was normal colored with stripes of this beautiful reddish color.The Crestie was lying in the corner and not eating the shed and the humidity was low and the temps were to high.They had 1 iguana in a 8 gallon and a BUNCH of dead hermit crabs with no extra shells.Dead frogs floating in their water bowl and On top of everything else a Dead BP floating in the water the dead shed wrapped around it’s head and neck...I was so upset about that one.Pet smart was OK they had the Leos on black calcium sand but they were all very healthy and the crestie looked great so I will be a returning customer.

i know it’s a bit late for some 1 to reply to this but i have to step in this. if some one was like that towards me, i would stand my ground and advise them to get the sand off them, if he carried on saying things like "a gecko is smarter than you" i would still keep calm and carry on telling him about whats rong with the geckos and if he sent me out i would sew him for animal creulty and dissrespecting me. altogether (my mum was a layer) you could end up with free geckos that will live safly with you and a bit of cash from the dissrespect that you could spend on containers ect.

The only drawback to that is the fact that the whole store was agreeing with the two idiots. So i couldn’t win, i tried calmly and then while shouting a few choice words left, with some help...

my petland has 20 leos in a 10 gallon with sand no hides 75 degrees at hotest point and no water dish also no food. 10 golden geckos mixed with 10 tokay geckos all geckos being fully grown in a 20 gallon 20% humidity no light. 30 anoles mixed with 6 house geckos and 3 long tailed grass lizards on cedar mulch no humidity or food. 1 russian turtel mixed with 2 red ear sliders all with a shell 9 inches in diameter no waterand rotten food and in a 20 gallon. 5 skinks in a 20 long no water ceder mulch and no basking site. and much more including 6 newts in a 2.5 gal, 6 toads in a 2.5 and 50 hermit crabs in a 20 gal
