We have used velcro on lids and doors and we also have found clips at the pet store that hold lids tight for our snakes. The only time ours have escaped is when the velcro or clips have been left off.
We recently found (by sheer luck for her and us) a bearded dragon in an industrial area parking lot and she was clearly an escapee. Perhaps someone had her outside sunning and took their eyes off her for a moment... they can move much faster than you might think.
