 Went to a fair ...

I visited a herptile fair last weekend, it was a long drive for one day almost 500 miles one way, but it was worth the effort. I managed to sell a few of my own kingsnake juveniles and bought these three instead.

I sold my breeding Pueblan couples last year, but when I saw these nice Pueblan "sockheads" bred by a Danish breeder I couldn’t resist. This is the female ...

... and this is the male.

I also bought this little female sinaloan and a three-year-old female of wich I have no pic just yet.

They look great! I really love that sockhead. It’s nice they have reptile fairs where you live, but are they only about once a year? I haven’t heard you talk about one lately.

Well, if I got them all counted, there are six fairs in Sweden per year, they are not only reptile fairs though. All different kinds of animals kept in terrariums are available, such as spiders, scolopenders, scorpions, mantis, cochroaches, beetles, snails, salamanders, frogs & toads. The next fair is closer to where I live, only about 75 miles away and it is aranged the last saturday in september. I’m going there to try to sell off my remaining 7 kingsnake juveniles.

Ordinary Pueblans have a rather thin first white or yellow band over the head, but when this first band is very wide like on those two in my previous pics, they are called "sockhead". It kinda looks like a sock has been pulled over their head don’t you think?

This hatchling of mine from this season has a ordinary first white band, just compare.

Thanks for the info on the sockhead. I am glad you put the pic on to compare with, it made it easy to see the difference. I hadn’t seen one like the pale colored one, what is the color name? The color is just so unusual, I love it. I havn’t seen one like that before.

Do you mean the male sockhead? It’s not that pale really, that photo was taken at dusk and the snake was about to shed. I’ll try to take a new pic of him soon.

Unfortunately the male sockhead died a few months ago, but I thought I’d share a pic showing what the female sockhead Pueblan looks like right now.

I put my small milks into a short brumation period over 4 weeks + the time for lowering and rising temps, 6-7 weeks total, and he wasn’t strong enough to endure that I think. He was a good eater, even better than the female, but obviously he had not got what it takes.

This is often challenged, people say small juveniles should not be brumated. Well i disagree on that. If a snake is not fit to endure a short brumation period, it would not have been a good animal to breed on. I think this short brumation is a good way to prove that the snake is not genetically weak or sick.

I argue the exact same way when it comes to force feeding snakes that refuse to eat. I simply don’t do it anymore. If a snake doesn’t want to eat by itself - all the conditions being perfect - it simply was not ment to be.

Yeah Peter, lots out there don’t feel the same way, I don’t brumate any feeding juveniles, but I can see where your survival of the fittest program could glean sturdier breeding stock. Stick to your guns and don’t worry what the others think, they’re your snakes.

Hmmm, swedish girls are from sturdy breeding stock....This is the long lost sweedish breeding formula!
