 Stupid Pet Stores!!!!
So, I was supposed to be getting a breeding pair of Sinaloan milk snakes from a breeder/pet store on the 14th. I went to see them last night because the last time I saw the female she was in full shed, so I wanted to see how she turned out. As soon as I got to the cages I knew something was screwed up. The light in the male’s cage was off and he was nowhere to be seen, so I asked to see the female. The girl went back to get her and asked me if I had taken the layaway off the male. I said no and left it at that. I wanted to watch her squirm. She brought the female out and immediately went to the back room. She came back with the owner and they had a talk and then the girl got yelled at. Turns out the 15 minutes I spent filling out the 3 copies for the layaway forms because they can’t invest in a copier was pointless. The girl was supposed to put a copy of the layaway info on the back of the cages so the other people can see it. The only thing that little idiot did was write in small letters on the cage glass that they were on layaway. She didn’t even take the prices off. So after a 15 minute talk with the owner she comes back and finally tells me they sold the male (trying to place the blame on everybody but herself) and she will find a male for me or I can just buy the female. For the pair it was $199. For just one snake it was $123. They weren’t even willing to make a deal with me on the female if I decided to not get a male from them. She got a 30 minute lecture by me and then I told her to find me another male and if she doesn’t find it before Christmas then I want $50 off. I decided to bring the female home before she accidentally got sold also. She is a very beautiful, docile little girl. I will post pics on Friday when it’s feeding time. She’s getting acclimated right now. So, to summarize, here is what the pet store did wrong:
1. They sold my male because they didn’t follow proper store procedures.
2. They screwed up big time and still weren’t willing to cut me a deal until I got mad and yelled.
3. When I asked for the female’s feeding chart it took them 30 minutes to find it and it wasn’t updated, so they had to find the person who fed her last.
4. They tried to get me to pay for both snakes (which I didn’t have) before I took the girl home.
5. They put the poor girl in a paper bag which they stapled shut. She escaped from the bag less than a mile after leaving and almost cut herself on a staple. She spent the rest of the 30 minutes in the hood of my coat.
Anyway, I got her home and put her in her tank. She seems pretty happy now. I named her Belinda which closely translates to "beautiful serpent" in Latin. Sorry about the rantings, but this was supposed to be a Christmas present for my boyfriend and I really wanted BOTH of those snakes. I’m really tired of "reputable" breeders mucking everything up for me. This wasn’t a chain store like Petco or Petsmart. It was supposedly, as far as everyone told me, a reputable breeder/pet store. Lesson learned. Never put another animal on layaway unless you don’t mind if it gets sold right out from under you.

look up kingsnakes.com, no second hand person, straight from a breeder and might be one in N.Y. or somewhere close and better prices.

When I’ve bought snakes they come home in a deli cup! On other occasions when I purchased snakes over 3 feet, they put him in a cardboard box with airholes, but taped shut for the 10 minute ride home.
Sorry to hear about your dilemma. Keep an eye out for local shows, too, and you may get a good deal on a male.

Thanks. I had already checked kingsnake.com, fauna classifieds and a few other local classifieds before I put these 2 on layaway, but couldn’t find anything better than the deal I was getting. It seems like Hondos and Pueblans are the big sellers right now. Unfortunately we don’t have local shows here very often. I’ve lived here for almost 2 years and there’s only been one small show. I will let the pet store look for my male for now unless I can find a better deal, but this is the last time I’m doing business with them other than to buy most of my cage accessories.

I do know how you feel about pet stores, we have only one and a snake is just another sale. and I all ways get a better deal on line, thats why I posted what I did.

Yeah. We have 2 reptile specialty stores here, but I will only go to the 1 now after this experience. We are regulars (the owners know our names) and spend plenty of money there, so they treat us well. I’d probably get better deals from them (most of the time) than online. It all depends on your location and what you’re looking for though. Thank you for listening to me rant and giving your input. I’m a little happier now since I got to hold my female today.

I do know how you feel after a rough day, I do like to spend some quit time with all my snakes, and in my snake room no one disturbs me but my 4 dogs and 1 cat

My reptile room happens to be my bedroom, so I don’t get the luxury of not being bothered. I have a 6 year old daughter full of questions and my boyfriend’s 2 girls (8 and 2) are here every other weekend. It’s fun telling them all we know about our pets and I hope they carry on the love for animals when they grow up. Animals need all the help they can get........Especially the creepy crawlies.

ALL PET STORES ARENT STUPID MOST ARE YES LOL I OWNED A PET STORE AND EVERYONE IN OUR TOWN CAME TO IT BECAUSE WE NEW OUR FACTS AND COULD GET THEM WHAT THEY WANTED AND AT A REASONABLE PRICE.... I MISS MY PET STORE FOR THE FACT OF GETTING ANY SNAKE I WANTED AT WHOLESALE PRICES..... BUT I AM HAPPY WITH MY SNAKES THAT I HAVE WHICH INCLUDE A 4 FT PUEBLAN MILK SNAKE A KENYAN SAND BOA LIGHT PINKISH RED TAIL BOA MEXICAN BLACK KINGSNAKE 7 1/2 FT GREEN ANACONDA 10 FT FLAWLESS SKIN BEREMESE PYTHON CHINESE WATER DRAGON VEILED CHAMILIAN 2 5 FT IGUANAS AND RATS

Unfortunately most pet stores are stupid. There is one small family owned pet store that I like very much because they are organized and know their stuff. Most pet stores are not like that. They should make prospective employees take a test on the basic care/feeding of the animals they keep, but we all know that’s not going to happen. If I owned a pet store that’s what I would do. I have tried applying at 3 pet stores. The reptiles were cared for very poorly and the employees could not answer the customers questions. I wanted to help the animals. Unfortunately, these pet stores take the first application that walks through the door. Blah! Currently I own 8 snakes, 11 lizards, 2 turtles, 2 rats, 2 ferrets and 2 cats. And I’m looking for a male Sinaloan milk snake for my female.

i think there should be more family owned based pet stores .......i will not go to stores like petland petco or petsmart they dont know anything about animals like i said our store did there was 3 of us and knew what we needed to know and gave advice and everyone loved our store lol its funny though cause now that we closed our store down everyone drives to another county for their needs lol have you tried checking on www.reptileauctions.com for what your looking for?
