 New milk

I just got a Apricot Pueblan Milk, and was wondering if they are normally extremely testy. He bit me when we got home and was putting him in the tank, I was just checking on him a little bit ago, and he bit me again. He is very healthy looking and right at 5 months old. I would love to handle him and get him used to it, but he wont have anything to do with it. He just bites, and zooms off and hides. Is this something he’ll grow out of, or just have to keep being presistent?

If you handle him regularly it should go away in no time.

Young snakes brought into new environments will usually be nippy for a while.

Depending on the snake itself it can take anywhere from a couple weeks of regularly handling to well, whenever he just feels like there’s no need to bite anymore.

The way I like to show my little snakes that I’m not a threat is by letting them bite however many times they want.

This is surely the quickest way to show to them you are not going to hurt them, although, some people don’t like the idea of being bitten repeatedly.

Most milks and kings are like that when young, they usually grow out of it. You must keep in mind that when little, these snakes are found on virtually every single predator’s menu, from thrushes and frogs up to foxes, badgers and large birds of prey. The small snakes need to be very nervous to be able to stay alive.

I usually don’t handle my snakes much, once a month at the most, but they become calm anyway. I have 25 kings and milks at this time of wich 4 are juveniles. The rest are adult snakes and they are all very easy going although I handle them very little.

thanks for the help. We’re going to keep working with him and see where it gets us. We try to handle everyone pretty often, I am handling my blonde madagascar hognose at least once a day to get him a little less skidish.

he’s been doing better now. (me and fordgt live together) i handled him some last night and he did excrete that defense liquid to try and ward me off but he didn’t try to bite at all. a little jumpy, but he did good. he ate good as well. i’ll just keep working with him and he should be fine. here’s a pic of him.
