 My New Milksnake

Hey, I just got a new pueblan milksnake today at the NY Reptile Expo. I’m so excited he is so cute and he is already a joy to have! I have a few questions. Do milksnakes need two identical hides and the temps in my cage are kind of low like around 77 fegrees F how can I higher that? I will post pictures of him later on.

temps should be about 80 to 85 in the hot end an about 70 to 75 in the cold end.About the hides prboley not 1 hide can be fine cause they burrow alot.

Yeah it was nice, they had a pretty decent variety of Hondurans. I was about to get one, but then I saw this guy and I loved him. I am also trying to fix the temps I will post some pics of him tomorrow because he is sleeping now.

You should have it about 80F in the warm end and about 74-76F in the cold end.=]

Ok, I gotta little problem here. The women that sold me my UTH at the reptile expo yesturday said that I could cut it, if I needed to. It turned out I did need to cut it, but now it’s not working becuase I know I cut a circuit or something. I’m going to the pet store later to purchase another UTH, but my question is what size UTH should I get. My tank is 24’’ X 12" X 12". Should I get a small UTH or a Medium UTH?

The UTH should cover about 1/3 of the tank. I have a hide on each side of the tank, but they are not identical. I have the magnetic peek-a-boo cave on the warm side and a half log on the cool side for my adult Sinaloan. For my baby Pueblan I have a humid hide over the UTH along with a small cave and 2 other small hides on the cool side. And just for the future I’ve never seen an UTH that you can cut. Good luck with your new snake.

Thanks, I am going to attmept to feed him today. I just want to know whether I should move him into a seperate enclosure to feed or to feed him in his own enclosure? I heard if you feed them in their enclosure then they will get used to your hand going into it and might think that it is feeding time and nip you or something like that. I’m feeding f/t so I will be dangling the small mouse from some tongs.

I know with my pueblan milk snakes i usually feed them in their enclosure reason why is because they don’t readily take food from me right off the bat actually come to think about it they never have but what i do is leave the dead mouse in the tank over night and its gone in the morning. congrats and good luck with your new snake.

Nice apricot Pueblan. You definitely need two hides for the snake. One should be placed over the UTH and the other on the cooler side. You cannot cut an UTH without severing the current circuit. The person who told you to do that does not know what she is talking about.

Also, Pueblans originate from the mountain regions of Oaxaca, Mexico wich means that 77F is a pretty good average temp. I would not go for the usual 1/3 coverage of the bottom surface with the UTH since this is not a tropical snake. I’d say 1/5 to 1/4 is quite sufficiant. If you feel that the snake needs more heat you can always mount a small heat spot over a high branch or rock for the snake to get some "sun".

 My New Milksnake

Ok thanks. Well I just got back from vacation thats why I haven’t been on here in over a week. While I was gone he ate which is very good to see and he also shed! My neighbor took care of him which was convinient as well. The problem is when I got back home, the tank was all wet with water beads all over the sides of the tank walls as well as dew all over the place? What could have caused this? I just got back today and the humidity was at a dangerously high 96%!!! My neighbor told me it look like that for a day or two but it still scared me. How do I prevent that from happening again because I don’t want to harm my snake (his name is Milky lol).

make sure there’s no heat source under the water bowel or atop it. that would heat the water and make the humidity in the tank go high especially if there a closed cover.

Ok, I think I fixed the humidity issue by wiping down the whole tank and leaving the water out for a little while. Anyway I posted some pics of Milky after his shed. Hope you enjoy....
