SCARED MILKSNAKE! My friends pueblian milksnake is really scared of just about anything. Its about 1 year now and eats fine but when you touch it it goes crazy and pees. Because of this she wants to give it away. When I hold her when shes curled up its fine but when shes streched out she goes crazy. Whats wrong?

SCARED MILKSNAKE! Nothing is wrong. Milksnakes can be found on vertually every predator’s menu, from frogs and thrushes, to large birds of prey and coyotes. Therefore they need to be afraid of just about anything larger than themselves. Most snakes can get used to being handled, but some will never accept handling without freaking out. There are certain ways to go by this in order to calm the snake down. One is to let the snake come into your hands by itself rather than you just stick your hand in and grab it.
When I have a milksnake that’s jumpy I open up the cage and hold my hands outside so the snake comes out into my hands. After some time the snake usually calmes down going at it this way.

SCARED MILKSNAKE! Try only handling when it’s actually out and about rather than disturbing it while its resting/hiding? It’s probably not used to a lot of contact, or it just doesn’t like being touched at all. It happens. The musking (the peeing you described) is just a stinky self defense mechanism.

SCARED MILKSNAKE! That’s what babies do. They tend to be more active in the evening as well. So when the lights are off and such they might be out when you can’t see them.

SCARED MILKSNAKE! I have the same problem with my young pueblan. And he is rarely out and about. I have been told this gets better as they get older but the musk is annoying. My plan is to keep working with it as it is worth the effort. I find that as long as I don’t get him overexcited sometimes he won’t musk me at all.
