 Musking milksnake!

I’ve had my pueblan milksnake for a little over a month now and I handle him quite a bit but he still either musks me or poops on me almost every time I pisk him up. I just wash it off and pick him up again but its kind of annoying! I was told that this tends to go away as they get older...does anybody have any experience with this? My sand boa has never done this, I guess its just specific to the breed but I hope it will get better as he gets older!

How do you hold him? Some are just scaredy-cats. I hope he stops doing that soon.

He’s funny-he tolorates being held but doesn’t love it. He will sometimes remain very calm until he thinks I’m not paying attention and then he’ll try to take off. This is usually when he does it. I’ll keep working with him and hopefully it does stop soon!

We are experiencing the same behavior, but we haven’t handled him that much. I’ve experienced kingsnakes doing this too. Does anybody know if temperature effects this behavior. We try to handle him when he is in low temp mode. Will a lower temp make him easier or harder to handle?

he will grow out of it. when i first got mine he was only a couple months old and he ’ran’ from me and "milked" every time i picked him up. just be patient and he will begin to tolerate handling better, but don’t handle them too much because this can stress some snakes out more. we have a new albino honduran who is also young and she still milks every time she is out, but my pueblan is pretty much grown out of it. as far as your sand boa, they don’t milk at all. milk snakes are called milk snakes because of their milking for defense purposes. they do it to try to make the predator think they are gross cause they smell and leave them alone.

my pueblan used to do that too but just recently she quit it and ive learnt how to handle her the taking out of the tank is the real problem for me she did this for a year. you just have to handle her and get used to her personality it will calm down and do this less frequently
