you have learned why they are called milk snakes. as a baby this is their defence against predators. they think that by "milking" on you it will smell and you will put them down. they will grow out of it, it just takes patientience on your part until they do.

What? You must be joking? Is this your own interpretation to the name milksnake or where did you pick that up? The name milksnake has absolutely nothing to do with young snakes musking. If it did, just about every snake species would be called milksnake since all small colubrids do it.

It’s true that small snakes musk in order to scare predators off, but that’s it. The name milksnake originates hundreds of years back when farmers found milksnakes in their barnes. People did not realize that snakes came there to hunt rodents, instead they thought that the snakes came to steal milk from the cows.

Both parties are correct. But don’t worry ,once you handle them a few times often they’ll know you’re not a threat. Mine’s does it all the time.

I don’t believe for one second that the musking habit of small colubrids in general suddenly would be the reason why milksnakes got their name.

That is not why they are called "Milk Snakes"!

The snake is simply "musking" as a defense (that was correct) and they do typically grow out of it with gentle and calm handling.

I would recommend holding the snake open handed inside it’s enclosure until it decreases or stops the musking.

And if you do choose to hold it outside of it’s enclosure...don’t put it back in it’s enclosure the moment it musks on you. Doing this will condition the animal to musk on you whenever it wants to be put down.

I hope this helps?!

 Milk snake question!!

Well it doesn’t matter anymore he got out about two days ago, and i haven’t seen him an don’t think i will! I feel so horrible :(. I put him a diffident cage, an one of us must hav left the top open a lil bit an he got out. this really sucks!! This happened with all our snakes, for some reason they always got out as baby’s. You think we would hav learned by now lol.

Here he is in the shape of a heart. This was taken I think about 3 days after we got him. an I think we had him for about 2 months. His name was Sobe.

Maybe all your snakes escaping is a sign you shouldn’t have them? lol just a guess though. Pay attention and put the top back on. Its not that difficult.

Make sure that you have a hide box for him, and that the temp is right. They will get real eager at escape if they are uncomfortable.

Glad you found him.
