 Newborn Pinkies . . .

Even the smallest of milk snake hatchlings can handle them at that size . . . It just doesn’t seem that way . . .

The trick will be--assuming it’s genuinely wild caught--to get them to eat a mouse. A small anole or swift is a possibility . . .

 Help?

Yeah, as concolor1 says, a newly hatched Pueblan milksnake has no problem whatsoever eating a small piniie mouse.

And Now That I Think About It . . .

As small as that snake is, it may be newly hatched and hasn’t completed its initial shed. I’ve never been able to get hatchlings to eat until that event occurs, so keep the little guy (or girl) warm with a bit of moisture, allow it to calm down and explore its new surroundings, and then try newborn pinkies . . . Most milk snakes have excellent appetites once they get started (although a couple of mine like their privacy); nature kind of takes care of ’em that way . . .

If you haven’t had snakes before (and milk snakes are excellent for newbies), most people don’t realize that they’re cold blooded critters that don’t need to eat nearly as often as we warm-blooded sorts . . . As a result there are a lot of snakes out there, the ones with good appetites, who are a bit on the chubby side . . . A pinky or so a week for the first few months is usually plenty, and it won’t bankrupt you keeping it fed . . .

 Help?

I’m a bit curious about this milksnake of yours. The Pueblan milksnake originates from the southern parts of Mexico, wich means that the snake has been brought to the U.S. illegaly.

Also, Pueblans are quite large when newly hatched and they never have problems with pinkie mice as first food. Therefore I have to ask if you are really sure about this being a Pueblan?

There are other subspecies of milksnake of wich the hatchlings are to small to be able to eat pinkie mice, for example the scarlet king (L. triangulum elapsoides) and the red milksnake (L. t. syspila).

This is a nexly hatched Pueblan milksnake
