 Missing snakey!

Help! Shes buggered off! My own fault, she settled down on top of the radiator (under the windowsill so I couldn’t reach her) and she was eating! Shes now moved, and has been missing nearly a month! I don’t want to use those horrid snake traps with glue - is there anything milk snakes are hugely attracted to? Any scents?

Oh thankyou! So nice to have someone as perfect as yourself come back to me with the worlds most useless reply.

 Missing snakey!

My daughter lost a Sinaloan and never found it again.

She also left the cage cracked on our Nelson cage, but I found it a week later by walking around at night after everyone went to bed, checking along the base of walls and in corners. Found her in a corner. Use a flashlight so you don’t turn the lights on.

That’s about the best I can offer. I tried heat pads in corners with mice and hides, but never had any luck and wasted about $10 on mice.

Best of luck! It’s unfortunate, but just like getting bitten, escapees are part of the hobby.

You are welcome! Anyone who even contemplates trying to trap their snake with glue does not need to be a snake keeper. Anyone who lets their snake sit on a radiator and then feed it there, does not need to be keeping snakes. So yes be glad someone such as myself is telling you that. Hopefully a better keeper will find it and give it a good home.

I do believe I said I didn’t want to use those traps with glue - and if forced to use one I already learned how to release her without causing her any harm so maybe I’m not all that bad. Its Summer here in England - the radiators aren’t on and haven’t been in months. Although I’m positive you’ve never made a mistake in your life - maybe check your facts next time.

When someone says they are possibly gonna trap their snake with glue. what more is there to say other than, you need to smack yourself. When someone says they feed their snake on a radiator, someone else needs to say, you need to smack yourself.

When someone asks for help its considered very poor form to judge them on a simple mistake when you dont have all the facts. I would welcome truly helpful advice from such an experienced keeper as yourself but instead you choose to ridicule and condemn. Maybe something to think about for any more new keepers that find their way here.. I certainly wont ask for help again.

I’m "One for Three" on Escaped Snakes . . .

All of them were milk snakes, one Sinaloan and two Nelson’s. The one Nelson I re-captured was hiding in the overflow drain in my old apartment bathtub. I was actually taking a nice hot soak when I saw it poke its head out (it was a hatchling at the time, now it’s a husky three-and-a-half footer).

I gave the matter a lot of though (every time I moved close, it ducked back in). Finally I decided to overfill the bathtub and stand back. As soon as the water level got high enough and and started flooding his new hidey home, he decided to bail...

I got lucky. Milk snakes are among the premier escape artists, and these days any cage I buy gets a thorough going over to ensure a secure lock (it also helps not to handle them when you’re overly tired).

BTW, I had a lot of experience with snake escapes when I was young (my mother has some stories, all funny fortunately, since I stayed away from venomous ones). So it wasn’t like I wasn’t mentally ready when I picked the hobby back up after a long absence...

I wish you well and hope this loss isn’t too discouraging. And truthfully, part of the reason I’m sharing my experience is to remind myself of the challenge in keeping snakes. I’m a couple of weeks away from a batch of hatchling corns, and I’ve had the luxury of mostly larger snakes for some time.

I will admit that I came down pretty hard on you but when a poster comes on talking about glue and radiators with regards to their snake...it sets off a fairly hot fire for most long time keepers. I am relieved to hear you will be refraining from trapping your snake with glue, and I am hoping when he is found that it will not be having meals on a radiator again where it is out of your reach. I see far too many kids and idiots buying snakes wanting to seem cool and then trying to turn it into a pet like a dog or cat when it wont ever be that type of pet for them. And then to hear the countless horror stories of how these snakes suffer and die, day in and day out...I just dont take kind to it. So I apologize for coming off harsh but now you see where I come from on the other side of things. I hope your snake does show up again for you, and I hope his health will be well. I have not had an escapee for a while but with past experiences I usually try to get down to the vantage the snake would have and I try to almost become the snake and see what it would see when moving through the area. Believe it or not I have recovered every escapee this way, although I look pretty silly when someone walks in on me

Indeed I can see it from your point of view, but Im 33 years old and in no-way trying to seem "cool" by obtaining a snake. Some of my friends now refuse to visit. I miss her terribly and will do anything to get her back.

Its messy, but the best way to find your snake is sprinkle a good bit of flour over your floors, especially around doorways, heat vents, and near plumbing. If the snake is still in the house (and not hidden in the walls) you can see its tracks and find out where its trying to hide. Good luck.

 Missing snakey!

I just got very lucky and found our missing milk snake yesterday. She escaped over six weeks ago when I inadvertently left the top of her terrarium unlatched. I initially thought she had gotten outside because later a neighbor called about seeing a snake in their front yard. But after a day or two, when it was late at night, I would occasionally hear something bump or get knocked. I tried live mice in a small terrarium with hides close by, flashlight searches, and was about to try talcum powder but was dreading the mess. During all of this time I had left her terrarium top open and her water "pond" full with the filter running. Just in case she decided to return to where she was used to finding food and water. It even appeared that the bedding in her cage had been disturbed every once in a while but she was never there when I checked. Until yesterday! Low and behold I went into the snake room for something else and noticed that the bedding looked moved again so I took a peek under her bark hide and there she was. I quickly covered her back up and latched the top. I rewarded her with two mice that night to reinforce her association of food with her terrarium but I think it was the water that brought her back. Here’s a pic of her in her home before she escaped. She’s a juvinile Black,(L.t.gaigeae) about 24" long.
