 Shedding Question

Hi,

My boyfriend and I have a Pueblan Milksnake that is almost 2 years old. My boyfriend recently moved in with me and the snake seems to have adapted well. I’ve noticed recently that the milksnake has been hanging out by his heater a lot...normally he favors the cooler end of the tank. I thought he might be getting ready to shed, he does look dull but what’s more conerning to me is that I am really noticing the black tips to his scales and each scale individually, before he just seemed to get dull. Should I be conerned?

Worried...

I should also add that he’s been rather inactive as well. He’s always been a very private snake but I usually see him out when I wake up or come home. When we went to him earlier this week he only ate one fuzzy mouse and wouldn’t touch anymore...

 Shedding Question

Milksnakes and most kingsnakes have black skin beneath their scales. When the snake has eaten and/or if it grows fast, the skin will be visible between the scales and that gives a "dirty" appearence.

Also, all milksnake subspecies originating from the extreme south of the species’ range, tend to get darker with age, many get more or less black when they are very old.

Pueblans belong to the group of milksnake subspecies from the far south and they often get very dark with age, starting with black scale tips, progressing further until the white is entirely either grey or black.

Among the milksnake subspecies originating from Mexico, the sinaloan milksnake keeps its colors best.
