That’s not true. Wether you should or shouldn’t hibernate milks depends on what subspecies they are. Eastern milks can be found as far north as Ontario and they definitely have to hibernate. All milksnake subspecies found in the central and northern parts of the U.S. should be hibernated not only for breeding reasons, but also because they have been evolving in a tempered and not tropical climate. Their metabolism depends on it.

I have been raising and breeding Eastern milks for 7 or 8 years now. I have had no problem not burmating the snakes I don’t plan to breed

Well that’s your choice, but I would not choose to do like that because I think that keeping snakes or whatever animal you might want to keep also include other things than just food and water, warmth and light. Nature has developed it’s inhabitants differently depending of where each and every species live. In Ontario no one expects it to be 68-86° F all year around and even as far south as Mexico, winter can be pretty cold somtimes, at least on higher altitude where for example milksnake subspecies such as pueblans live.

I choose to brumate all my Lampropeltis between 8 and 12 weeks at about 50-60°F depending on what species they are. I keep sinaloan and pueblan milks, Californian and speckled kings, San Pedro and Chihuahua mountain kings.

I definitely feel that even if these snakes survive many years without ever beeing put in hibernation, it’s not natural and therefore not good for them. I even think it might cost a few years of their lifespan.

In comparison, I recently read that if humans would be able to sleep away the winter like bears do with the same metabolic shut-down-system, we would be able to live for about 300-400 years.
