Let me guess, yours in young. Let us know if you still feel this way in about a year. Have you built an adult enlcosure, or paid an adult food bill yet? An Ackie at $250 is a steal compared to a $35 sav. It’s amazes me that people are so naive as to only look at the purchase price of the actual lizard. |

An eight ft cage is not suitable for an adult Sav. It is as stated excellent for a trio of Ackies. They will be pure joy to see interacting in an enclosure of that size. An adult Sav I’ve never had. But my trio of adult yellows eat about $40 worth of crickets a month. Plus the supers and supplemented mice. There’s no way you’d feed even one adult Sav for that (properly) |

In choosing a goanna, first look at temperment and ’tame-ability’. I was asked by a friend recently to advise him on purchasing a pair of monitors for long term family pets. I picked two species that have the POTENTIAL for being handled and taming down. I chose the Mangrove Monitor, Varanus indicus and the Timor or Blue Spot Monitor, V. timorensis. The former costs from $ 75- 100 for a jv and maxes at Five feet. The latter is much smaller 20-28 inches and more expensive $ 99-200 dollars for a jv. They are also a bite on the nervous side but most can be tamed down. Your cage size is minimal for the Timor and too small for the Mangrove.(8’ high x 12 feet long by 4 feet deep. Both will need large up to 1/2 the cage length in water bowls. They love to soak. They will also need lots of climbing accessories and basking limbs and some good hides where male and female can enter and turn around together. Check out the kingsnake classifieds for ads on monitors. For general information go to our own section and check out the care sheets there. If I were to give you advice - do the research first!!!! Examine what you plan to do with these animals. Pets or breeders. Each is different. Breeders do not make the best of pets sometimes. Good Luck |
