They are very rarely offered in the US. I would imagine CAN would be worse. They are expensive b/c of their rarity. Prices range widely.

You may want to raise one and nail the husbandry before going straight to breeding goals. Good luck, nonetheless.

Hey Kirk, I remember you wanting an ackie, then a sav, then a black tree monitor and then a mangrove monitor. Have you bought any yet? Just curious.

There are 2 breeding them in North America.

One in the US Frank Retes, hatchlings are around $2000 give or take, and sexable young are higher, adults go up from there when you can find those willing to sell them, at one time they were $12,000 each years ago.
In Canada the only breeder I know of may still be breeding them, or not, he is Steve Blain.
Both used to have a load of offspring of all species, Im not sure if Steve still deals with many species any more.

Steve Blain is an importer. He’s never given any proof or indication of ever having bred a single species of monitor.

He has owned female lace monitors, but has never bred them. He got his from someone who has actually bred them, in Europe.

Really, so I guess the eggs he posted hatching.

The females he posted laying years ago were not his then?
He did breed them Im sure, unless they were not his, but someone elses. Thats was back when he bred several species, lacies, crocs, etc.
I dont know what he deals with today, but he did at one time.
If not then Frank Retes is the only breeder in the western hemisphere of them. Anyone else can prove otherwise?

 You got it, SHvar

Any photos you’ve seen him post of lace monitor eggs/hatchlings were from Europe. He has never bred lace monitors. According to him, he’s never even owned a male.

In fact, I am convinced that he has never bred a monitor of any species. He’s never once shown any evidence whatsoever of having done so. He’s a big talker, alright, and will tell you about all of the monitors he’s bred, but as soon as anyone asks for photographs he squirms. It isn’t as though he doesn’t own a camera, either, for he has no problems posting photographs of agamids that he’s bred.

In one instance he was telling me about his fantastic monitor enclosures so I asked to see photos. He refused to post any, but said he’d email photos if I promised not to ever post them or show them to anyone else. Why? Because they were photos of someone else’s set-up (the owner was in the photo). Not only that, they weren’t even monitor enclosures, but python enclosures (with the pythons sitting in them)!

A couple of years ago an acquaintance drove to Quebec to visit him and his famous monitor breeding ’facility’. When he got there, he was told that Steve’s family had suddenly taken ill so this person could not visit the ’facility’ but that Steve would happily bring monitors to his hotel room to show him. He showed up with a WC jobiensis.
