so they can dig otherwise, they will become stressed and possibly obese (digging = exercise) they dog for food and homes in the wild.

Dirt acts to increase humidity (they can burrow to "hydroregulate"), thermoregulate (get out of the heat), for shelters/security and for an activity to do all day long. For a gravid female it is mandatory for her to deposit her eggs.
