 Questions About Niles

Hey everyone! I don’t own any monitors (just a ball python) but I check out this forum quite often because I find them really fascinating. I’m doing a report for school on Nile monitors and I need to know somethings about the care of these monitors in captivity. Here of the couple of questions I need answered:

-How big do they get (when they’re hatchlings and when they’re full grown)
-What do they need to eat through their entire lifetime and how often?
-What size of an enclosure do they need when full grown
-What is their temperament like? (I’ve heard they’re quite nasty, but if you disagree, it would be nice to have both sides of the argument)
-Are they mainly CB, CH or WC?
-What temperatures do they need (ambient and basking and anything else)
-What level of humidity do they need?
-What are some of the requirements they have (i.e. large water dish, things to climb on, if they need exposure to sunlight or just a UV bulb or if they need to be taken for walks, anything like that)
-Or if there’s anything else that might be good to know.

Just so everyone knows, this is not the only thing I am using to research, I just think it would be nice to get some information from people who keep them and/or know a lot about them. Thank you for your time!

-Jake

 Questions About Niles

Maybe because he is smarter than you, and is thinking outside the box, in turn he shall get a good grade for going out of his way.

Hatchlings are small 8-12 inches, adults can get rather larger 5-7 feet. record female 7’ 11" 3/4"

Whole foods, mice, rats, bug, sea foods, any whole prey animal, but with this species sea foods, and bugs are a good diet.

Massive caging for full grown adult would need a 10x6x6 with a good size pond.

They are not aggressive animals by nature, they are fast to defend them self’s. They are very defensive animals, if you were to walk into the room with the Nile, it would run and hide from you. How is that aggressive? They bite, and whip when you go into there home and try and grab him... even standing his ground is not aggressive, aggressive is going out of his way to bite you... which they rarely would do.

99.999999999999999999 % of all Niles are W/C.

They need to be kept in a vast range of temps, from 72-78 being cool, to 90+ on the warm side, and 130-170 basking temps.

Ranging humidity, but rather high mostly 80%+.

Large pond, 2+feet of dirt to dig and burrow, shelves, rocks, log etc to climb in/on. They do not ’need’ UV bulbs, or the sun. No walks lol.

This species is a species you need to watch while in and around adult animals, you need to respect them to the fullest! They are really good looking giants, and can be neat captives, if properly cared for. I i had the room for a 12x6x6, i might get a pair of Varanus ornatus, a cousin on Varanus niloticus.

Hope i helped some.

Cheers,
Chad

Cheap 15-50 bucks, but that is such a small % of what you will pay to keep one to adulthood.

 Questions About Niles

In regards to what Ben Flynn said : I do not want a Nile! I can’t take care of any monitor right now let a lone one of the biggest ones. I know I’m not ready for one. I know the questions I asked may seem like I wanted to get one but I really, really don’t. My report is on why so many unexperienced keepers buy them and they die because those same keepers couldn’t provide the right requirements. I see why now. These animals require a lot of care and would definitely cost a lot of money (money I don’t have and won’t have for years). I do not want a nile monitor. This truly is for a school report.

Don’t worry I’m not mad, you don’t have to be sorry. I can see how you would think I would want one, my questions did kind of come off that way lol. I’m not offended and you don’t need to be sorry.

Sounds like one of those extra credit reports..

You know, pick a topic and right or type it. But instead of reading books, asking a few questions, and researching better, they come here and ask specific questions so that they just have to word the report you wrote for them.
The other option is that they are looking at a nile in their neighborhood petstore, they are trying to get the animal, and wnat to know if the price is high or low. How ingenious to get someone to answer all their questions so quickly.
Either way I hope they dont get one.
