 Little help?

Alright. I have done my research, and i have bought a savvie before. (sadly i was informed that the whole clutch that hatched, plus mine, all died:( ) And i was just about to go get another one after doing some more research, when my dad, who is usually awesome about letting me get animals, (i think i am up to 22) all of a sudden said no. He said he doesnt want an animal that will tear his arm off at any given chance. I have tried to tell him that savvies are the most easily tamable monitor out there. (yes i know they can still bite) Does anyone have anything i can use to help persuede him? i can tell he is starting to bend, but i need a break! any help?? Thanks,
Kate

Let him know you’ve researched....Before I get a new pet my mom makes me write everything I know about their care and other facts down and show it to her....So maybe you can do something like that......And make sure you can pay for everything yourself.....Also, don’t keep asking constantly or annoy him about it...wait a while.....And tell him if the monitor bites off his arm you’ll buy him a new one..... My mom is not strict when it comes to how many animals I can have, but I do not think she’d let me get a sav.....Also, make sure you can keep it up, don’t get one and then find out your dad won’t let you care for it properly....If he says yes talk to him about what it needs.....

I thought the chameleons would be tough, but they arent!! all i have to do special for them is mist them 4 times a day. i want something big and something smart. Im sure if i tell my dad that i will buy him a new limb he would let me. hahahahahah

Wow who told ya a savi is the best or most easy tame!!! I have a sav and i will tell you a great moniter that will not tear your arm.Cuz my sav does tear my skin off realy easy cuz they have very sharp nails and can scratch though stuff easy. You have to have every thick wood.
But a great friendly and very tameably moniter is a black and white argentina tegu. Their great ive had a new 1 for a mth and shes a baby but she knows me she loves me and she interacts w me. She will crawl out of the windo and come on my lap for me to pet her shes very smart. There just great and almost every1 has the same luck w them. But dont comfuse them the columbian tegu’s there not as tame and usaly dont become tamed near as well. But my sav ive had 2 years and she bite and it hurts lik a b!tch and she runs away she dosnet lik to be held and just not so enjoyable. But if your looking for a great reptile i sugect checing out tegu’s the agrentina tegu’s thoe there the tamer 1s yoiu could chek out the form 4 them too.
But ou of all my reps shes the only1 i have ever enjoyed so much and got so much love from!

Here are pic’s of them both!

Have you bred the reptiles you have now. That is sometimes challenging and could be very rewarding.

I wouldn’t reccomend any large lizard to anyone unless they are self supportive.... meaning have a source of income.... (I don’t know if you do or not).

I say this as these are an expensive project... Many reptiles once the set up is done, are fairly cheap to keep...a monitor isn’t...

If anything the expense gets more.....

I know you do your homework Katii from your other posts in other forums. I also know your responsible and you have help around you if need be....

My main concern for you would be money.....

I was shocked at the costing for these big guys... And the experienced owners on here enlightened me on it....in US funds no less....so double it for Canada where I am...

Just for my crickets to order on line which is cheaper than the store...its 25 for 1000 crickets and 25 to 35 shipping! So 50 a month basically for just crickets though you would save alot on frozen foods if you have a big empty freezer...

This is solely to make you aware....

Maybe some of the keepers can list what they feed and you can Canadian price it....

It was unfortunately out of my range... In this area as our closest supplier is in other provinces...
Maybe your area can be more reasonable for foods.... this was my first concern...

The other is no herp vets here...

So as a responsible owner I decided at present I cannot own one....someday...

I was also interested in Tegus. How big do the red a white ones get? i would like a big lizard. And any critisism or help would ne appreciated!! Hoppy: i do my research yes, but i also tend to ignore something i dont want to be true. I do have a job, and a very fitting one. I work at a reptile store. So i can get pretty much any reptile for a good price. I also have 25% off anything i need. and sometimes free bugs. I can order a vast amount of feeders, as well as variety for very low prices. My boss (the owner of the store) if extremely knowledgeable about any reptile and has great connections. He has met people like Ron Tremper.
Someone who asked: (im sorry i forgot your screen name) Yes, i have bred them, and it is extremely rewarding. However, it is just to easy. Leopard geckos and cornsnakes arent exactly challenging. Chameleons arent either. And bearded dragons fit in there somewhere too. haha but i am interested in a big tegu also. Actually...does anyone have any recommendations of good sized (for me, that would be over 3’) lizards with good personalities?
Any suggestions are welcome. And thank you in advance!

I like monitors better, but a lot of good things have been said about Arg. tegus. I cared for one for a while and it was very cool. Argentine black and white tegu are great tegus. Don’t confuse them with the cheaper Colombian black and whites. A lot of people hibernate them which seems like a pain to me.

Katiib-
I hope you understand that a Sav is not going to be like a great big bearded dragon. Some animals just can’t be tamed!!!
I have talked to people who have also heard that Savs are the easiest to tame and get real friendly and got animals that were true to monitor nature. (unfriendly and mean!!) And after failed attempts at taming these lizards they just gave them away!! :(
I think you should spend some time at a reptile rescue that has large monitors and help with feeding and cage cleaning.
They are more work than you think. I had done a lot of research before I got my first one too, but no amount of "research" prepares you for actually living with a monitor.
I have 3, 2 of them are black throat monitors and 1 is a sav and its a lot of work. Keeping them fed is very costly! I recently placed an order with rodentpro.com for almost 300 dollars worth of frozen mice and they do eat other things. That won’t last to long for me.
Also cage cleaning, these guys poop like dogs and it smells worse. When my adult BT takes a crap in her cage is smells up my whole house, (no joke)!
They are VERY strong! My husband had a hard time holding our newest monitor still. A few days after we got him we noticed a tick. He was about 2 and a half feet and my husband is 6’3, 210lbs! I had on a pair of zoo quality padded leather handeling gloves. That little guy wipped me so hard is stung my hand really bad even through the glove.
I want you to think about what you are going to do with a large Savannah monitor lizard if it doesn’t tame down for you like you want. Are you going to be ready to deal with every aspect of what monitor keeping can throw at you? Good luck!

the red tegus you talked about also get large, about 4 feet + for a male. and very robust. they are the heaviest of the tegus. they are also very costly. my monthly rodent pro bill for 5 adults exceeds $100 a month, thats just on frozen feeders, not fruit veggies and insects. hibernation is not needed for casual keeping. but it is NEEDED for breeding. to my knowledge there has never been a batch of good eggs from an unhibernated pair. contrary to most beliefs they can skip a year and still be fertile. hibernation can be very stressfull, not to the tegu. but the keeper lol, its an automatic panic attack lol. a lot of black and white will go down on thier own, regardless of temperature. Varnyard’s went down in august, in florida lol.

I love them, but they arent for everyone. this is my male, hes is a little longer now thoug

thanks everyone!! we are moving to the country and i have my own building for my reptiles, so smell is not an issue. i work in a reptile store and we have a water moniter i have to clean and feed. And, maybe im crazy, but i like to do it! i like to see the animal go back into a nice clean enclosure and know that I did it. I am aware of the feeding bill. Not to worry. i breed mice for my snakes, so i can just breed them more often. i can get feeders bugs ...you know what? i already said this in another post. haha but yes, i know the work involved, im just not as knowledgeable on the different species. Im just looking for which would be a good monitor or tegu for me. 4’+ thank you all though! im glad youre telling people about the bad, and not just the good! Opens some eyes:)

if you and your dad are willing to loose limbs i say do you research and get what ever you want. many 4+ foot lizards can get mean. that is right about the size when they know they can hurt you.

what about a larger speices of snake like a RTB?

if i were you id go with a arg tegu. if you want a big lizard that wont try to kill you everytime youre near it. savs are cool my buddy has and it is evil i swear. EVIL. but if you want a lizard to just LOOK at go with a monitor of some kind i like argus monitors sexy lizards those guys.. but if you want a large lizard who will interact with you and sometimes actually WANTS to be held go with a tegu . theres a bunch of great breeders of tegus they breed around aug or sep i think so thtas the time of years you’ll be able to get a baby tegu. and i would totally get a baby and raise him. im gonna get a baby this in like aug 07

alot of iggys are evil and dude monitors are cool lizards if you want to LOOK AT them in fact they are the coolest im just saying monitors are pissy lizards. ve never seen one that seems to be ok with handling im sure there are some but the chances of the cat that started this thread getting a monitor and it not being evil is kinda slim all im saying. it depends on what he wants if he wants an awesome looking lizard to just watch. get a monitor of some sortr ive said many times before monitors are damn sexy. but if you want a lizard you can hold and you want to sit on your lap or like borrow beside you on the couch as you watch tv get a tegu

that is just not true. do you own monitors? many will get used to you and will scratch at the window because they want out. tegus can be just as mean. i have seen quite a few mean tegus or skittish tegus.

no reptile is evil they are just not mammals.

bro when i use the world evil i dont mean evil as if i think they should be damned to hell. i have owned monitors before. when i was alot younger. and im sure there are nice monitors bro as i said ive just never seem em. and tegus if you get em as babies and hold em often its pretty much a sure thing it will end up being a real nice adult. there are exceptions but those exception are from keepers who dont handle their tegus. monitors are beautiful and smart creatures. that i wouldnt reccomend tryin to hold. if you insist on holding your monitor right on but that just causes stress to the animal. and dude i never said all reptiles are evil. youre getting red on me. dude ive seen beardies that i would swear seriously LOVE their keepers and ive seen tegus show what looks to be love for their keepers. but monitors, its a bit diffrant. not diffrant in a bad way.. just diffrant

hmmm...he eh? interesting.. last time i checked, there was NO penis to found flopping around between MY legs. hahahahahaha
but i am not afraid to get bit. I am, however, cautious. Being bitten can do some good if not too serious. It plants some respect and caution for the animal. It also helps with understanding the animal’s limits. Which is why i would buy a baby. Im not looking to get bitten of course!!! Im just explaining my view on being bitten. The by law in my area (however, i am moving soon so eff that:P ) is no constrictor snake over 5 feet. Pretty much no boas or pythons. If you have a ball python you can get a $10,000 fine. And those will never get five feet. And with breeding snakes, i think i will have enough of them for the time being. I thought about it extensively, and im not going to get a huge lizard right away. Im going to wait until im done school (this year) and get my life a little more planned out. Thanks for the info! and that video makes me want one even more! imagine that eh...sitting in your living room with a bunch of people..." FEE-FEE COME HERE!!!! COME HERE!!" and from around the corner comes a five foot lizard. hahahah awesome.
