 Ackie behaviour clarification

I have been watching my red and yellow ackies very closely and have a question on some of the breeding/dominance behaviour. If the behaviour is dominance, rather than breeding, does the male still rub his chin along the females neck and stroke her with his claw? I am curious as I have seen a lot of this for the past couple days, but they go behind a visual barrier so I haven’t seen the vents locked other than once. The males are definitely trying to lift the tail, not just mount from above. I don’t want to get my hopes up if it dominance and not breeding.

Secondly, someone posted that ackies mate for 2-5 days then not after that for the cycle. I think it was Biawak. My red male is still a bit lethargic, so I want to pair my second yellow male with the female who already appears to be developing eggs. If that original mating period was missed (and is it decided by the male, female, or both), is there any point in putting him in uintil she lays her eggs. I may be too late regardless as she went back into her nest this evening. She may be ready to lay soon. I’m hoping the red male had a good afternoon or 2 in there that I didn’t witness.

Thanx, Warren

 Ackie behaviour clarification

Hi Warren,

First of all, I’m a little unsure about just how many ackies you have. Could you clarify, please. It sounded like maybe you are trying to cross reds and yellows.

Have you posted pics of them before? Sorry if I missed them. Next, how sure are you about the sex?

In my experience, rape and consensual mating look quite a bit different. But even if it is rape, the males may do various types of rubbing/stroking.

I spend quite a bit of time monitoring my monitors, so consensual copulation and the things that lead up to it, are pretty hard to miss. The females build up fat, do some test digging, there is courtship type behavior and they copulate many times, over the course of days, often in the open. The sessions are usually at least 30 mins to 1hr, or more, not a quickie. It should be easy to see if the female is unreceptive and stressed.

I would imagine that you don’t spend a great deal of time in this very cold basement....?

Cheers,

 Ackie behaviour clarification

Here is a video of my storri copulating that I shot earlier this evening. From what I gathered of your comments on the Dutch forum, you are into videography, so please excuse the low quality. I shot it with a still camera, through polycarbonate, and the lighting was poor. With everyone posting vids on youtube, I guess I’ll have to pull the VX2000 out of the closet one of these days.

 Ackie behaviour clarification

Biawak, I appreciate you commenting ,considering the last post we argued in. First, my basement isn’t that cold for me, just for the monitors. The floor temp is 50-60f. The ambient is 70-75f. The heat ducts are in the ceiling, and angled downward. To clarify, I’m 95% sure of sex based on spur size and head/neck size. The 2 yellows are definite females. One red is a definite female based on previous egg production (I’m the third owner, and know the owner for the past 2 years very well.) I have one definite red male, one definite yellow male and the next is a probable yellow male. (6 in total, 2 reds, 4 yellows) His head and neck are wider than the known females, but narrower than the known males. Spurs are the same size as the known males.

The behaviour I’m seeing is the probable male is mounting the 2 known females, who have been wiggling their tails, I’m guessing scenting the area, and he(?) is mounting them. ?He strokes their neck and claws them as they wiggle behind the nest box in the temp enclosure. I cannot see what happens there. The females wiggle a lot, so I don’t know if this is natural in monitors, as my beardies and uros do this to ensure a strong enough mate. The females do lift thir tails a bit as the move around the back of the enclosure. I have been meaning to move them to a 6’x3’x2’ enclosure with a full 1’ substrate, but have been dealing with a lot of crap in my life in the past couple of months. (my ex is a prostitute meth/crack head) I see a nest hole dug by one of the females in the temp enclosure currently. The nest area is moist cactus soil in a 2’x18’ x12’ rubbermaid. ( I know it is not ideal, but the beat I can do until tomorrow when I build the real enclosure. I’m now on vacation for 2 weeks YEAHHHHH!). I have been meaning to do this for a couple of weeks since I had them, but life got in the way. One yellow appeared gravid when I got her. I hope people will understand. I spend 2-4 hours/ day observing them off and on through the evening hours. The behaviour I notice happens over about a 2h period.

I would rather produce some crosses rather than have the female red produce duds. There are few ackies produced yearly in Canada, and some variety might be good. I know many oppose this, but for the effort, I would rather see some viable eggs.

If pics of each animal will help, I will post some.

Again Biawak, I appreciate your comments.

BTW, the video looked pretty good to me for a web video. No worries.

Warren

Be careful, males and females mount each other.

Usually during the day in the open dominace is more common.
My ackies seem to like it in the cover of darkness in a burrow, or under an object out of sight.
Females will dominate males, other females, males will dominate male or females.
