How do you keep the wood from rotting from all the mositure and humidity.

Wont damage the wood.

FRP(fiberglass reinforced plastic) seems to be the best choice. You can also use Polyurethane or similar on the ply which will help slow the rotting of the wood.

About how much does fiberglass reinforced plastic cost? Is Polyurethane nontoxic, or does it come in different types, some toxic, some not?

 Plywood building question

You may also consider building up your cage from a stock trough. The stock trough could be used to hold the moist substrate and you could build a cage on top of that. I am not sure what you would have to do to waterproof/protect the wood, but it would be much cheaper than lining the entire cage with FRP (also is easier to make a larger cage). Lining wood cages with FRP and sealing them is essentially the same as making a tub, so you might as well use a cheaper pre-built tub instead. As mentioned, you could probably coat the exposed wood with Polyurethane, but I am not sure. I don’t know, I am just giving out ideas. I haven’t had to build a cage for my varanids (although if I get a flavi/argus cross I will most likely have to).

Marine or spar varnish will work reasonably well. You will need to seal corners with silicone. The varnish is what wooden boats are finnished with. A gallon will cost as much as the FRP though.

I used Polyurethane water based nontoxic, put 3-4 coats on it and you should be fine, i did 3 coats inside, and outside of the entire enclosure.

Yea marine varnish works well. Make sure you seal the ends and silicone the corners. I made a trough from 2x12 lined with 60 ml rubber roofing. I checked it out, its safe. I t’s the same stuff as pondliner but much heavier. I dont know how much it costs, I get it at work. You can, of course, find it on line.
