New upgraded food post. (A few photos)

Well, I always see people asking, can I feed this, or can I feed that. Is it ok to feed this once a month, etc etc etc. Will with hurt my monitor? You get my drift? (NOTE : PLEASE READ THOUGHT I’VE ADDED SOME NEW TEXT TO THIS POST)

Well, to be truthful, there is a risk on feeding ANYTHING, including ’normal’ ’proven’ food items i.e. : rodents Some times rodents(not just rodents any food item) can carry new bacteria to your monitor making it fast for a certain about of time. In fact when you get sick a huge percentage is new bacteria entered your system (Food poisoning) other words don’t be to scared to feed a new prey item to your Varanid, as long as it’s clean and WHOLE as followed.

Some basic rules on feeding prey items to your monitors, is WHOLE FOOD = the WHOLE animals WHOLE mice, not the legs, head, other parts. etc....
Make sure your food source is clean, and are healthy animals (story about that later) Don’t feed crapped on, dirty food items or unhealthy, because this can reflect onto your monitors health. Would you go ahead and eat dirty foods?

A basic diet for newer albig keepers, should consist of birds, and rodents. With this species I believe with age an all rodent diet if not used right, can and will lead to obesity. Most albigs especially with age tend to prefer birds over rodents. This statement above should not be taken wrongly. If your husbandry allows so you CAN feed a all rodent diet to albigularis, though I don’t, and I believe with adding a few other food items into their diets, you will have healthier animals than a all rodent diet.

Some other food items that you can safely use.
WHOLE Sea food
Crabs
Shrimp
Octopus
Fish(Trout, Bass, Crappie, etc etc)
Crayfish(crawfish{Whatever you want call them}haha)
Mussels
Clams.
More foods
Snails(a favorite)
Snakes
large bugs(Roaches, Tarantulas, Scorpions, Millipede’s, Locust)
Rabbits
Guinea Pigs
Pigs (if you have large albigs and other species of Varanids)
Frogs
Lizards
Turtles
Fertile eggs
There are so many food items out there that you can feed, of course this is not needed not even close. These are just to add variety (if you like) and for some people some of these items can be easily obtained. Then you have to think again, are these clean healthy food items? Story time.

Well, I found a really cheap food source of chicks (chicken peeps), I didn’t take to consideration that, these were the natural selection animals that didn’t make it throw shipping, and being picked on and killed by other animals = not healthy crapped on animals = dumb of me. I got some 600+chicks for like 5 bucks. I didn’t get home for another 8 hours of them sitting there rotting = dumb of me, I then froze them and started feeding a few days later, my males ate them with gusto, but my female ate the time was on a fasting, and did not eat many. I keep feeding them to the males for about a week (female was not eating much mostly mice at this time) I come in finding my male acting weird, at the time I didn’t think anything of it, and I went to the other cage checking on my pair, I found my male (buddy RIP) dead, it tore me up bad.Tore me up so bad I almost sold off everything, and got out of reptiles. After that I moved in my other male which seemed fine, into my females cage, and soon after that he passed away after a meal of chicks. My female which ate very few got sick and started acting VERY weird and abnormal (if you can call monitors normal haha) and refused to eat for 13 days. She is now fine, and eating like mad, still as not got all of her weight back on, but she was never a large built Varanid.

This post was made sort of specific to Varanus albigularis, White, and Blackthroat Monitors. The whole point of this post is not to feed a massive variety of foods (I feed a rather wide range of food... but this is only because it is available to me at different times.) it’s to show people that their are more simple options than just bugs and rodents.

Some other species that don’t do the best on a all rodent diets are, Dumerils, Black Roughnecks, Indicus complex, Bosc’s, and maybe a few others I’m missing.

Cheers,
Chad

Nice, so where did that Mark Bayless guy go? Just curious because he seems pretty knowledgeable about monitor diets. When he was talking about the diets of each species, such as when he said V. exanthematicus ate insects and snails, did he mean that those are the foods that should be fed the most or was it just like a "if it doesn’t eat these things occasionally, its gonna get owned" type of thing?

Mark K. Bayless passed away last Nov. 1, Exanthematicus shouldn’t be feed an all rodent diet. He meant, those should be added to a rodent diet, along with birds.

Chad

Ow, that’s horrible. Thanks for the information, anyway. Roaches, mice, chicks, and crayfish should work for my boscs then.

It’s a natural food for some species, aren’t we supposed to offer (as much as we can) the closest thing to their natural life in the wild? Why should that stop with what they eat?

good point. i guess im just a softy for turtles. i dont think it’s vital that they are fed turtles to survive though. my friend has a 15 year old water. dont think he ever fed it a turtle. lol. also i imagin they would be rather awquard to swallow. lol. also the asain turtle crisis kinda makes me mate the thought of eating turtles. rat... smelly animal. lol.

Didn’t have to be rude, this is what this post is for, he’s not hijacking it.

Yes your Ackie can eat Anoles, but Anoles are not the cleanest, or best feeder lizard to feed.

take no notice of nile_monitorv, he’;s being very rude lately. yes previously mentioned anoles are the equivilent of goldfish, full of parasites. possibly insectisides? i would not bother. u could breed ur own. but it’sa lot of effort, and there are few few cb anoles, so it would be a shamefor them to just be a meal. lol. or u could worm wild ones. again $$$. i wouldnt bother. i problaby isnt very safe to feed wild ones. - did you read that nile_monitorv?
