Rubbermaid tub, I personally use substrate some don’t. I use a Peat moss, Coco Fiber, Cypress multch, and dirt mix. (had it laying around). It keeps the babys hydrated and I see less dead roaches. Use egg crate for climbing/hiding, I use heat tape/warm room for eat. Food Veggys/fruit mostly, and Chicks/mice for protein, sometimes High protein Game bird feed. Cheers, Chad |

Just as an example I’ve got two Sterilite bins that I use for my breeders. Each has a large hole cut in the lid and then a screen covering it for ventilation. Under each bin I have a large heat mat on a rheostat. I started off using peat moss for substrate but I found it too dirty and had a hard time seeing the little roaches when it was time to pick them out to feed. Now I have them on aspen chips and they seem to be doing fine, and it’s much cleaner. As far as feeding them goes, I usually keep some dry wheat bran in there for them, and then feed some fruit/veggies (very often apples, I always have them around and they’re cheap) and a fuzzy mouse for protein. In each bin I have a watering dish (tupperware container with a couple holes in the lid turned upside down on a dish with a paper towel folded up in it). Some people say you don’t need a water dish but I like to keep it in there so I don’t have to worry if I happen to neglect them for a day or two. At each feeding I also mist the bejesus out of the bin. When it came time to clean out the substrate I took all the big roaches out as best I could, and dumped the substrate and any roaches left in it into a 3rd bin. I’ve been feeding my smaller lizards exclusively out of that bin for almost 2 months now, and I’ve still got tons in there, plus I’ve noticed that my breeder bins are filling up again. I may have to feed off some of my breeders soon just to slow things down a little...once they’re established there’s no stopping them! Just for the record I’m breeding discoid roaches. I started off in October with a starter colony of ~200 mixed size roaches and left them alone until mid december and I’ve been feeding them ever since. I’m currently feeding them to a chinese water dragon, an eastern collared lizard, a baby leopard gecko and of course the timor monitor. |
