 More dumb Floridians

All I have to say is...why? Look at what else they are finding in Florida now
Link
4th post down, 10th pic.

Do you guys think that these may have a chance at breeding there? What will the affects be on the native fauna? Considering that they are insectivorous, it couldn’t be too bad?

Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts.

For the 144 monitor sightings with habitatdata, 31.9% were along or in canals (sometimes on seawalls or docks),27.1% were along or on roads, 20.8% were in yards, 11.1% were in vacant lots, 5.6% were near ponds or lakes, and 3.5% were going into woods. We found eight well-developed eggs inside a partially decomposed female (52 cm SVL) collected on 15 August. (bottom of page 5, top of page 6)

"However, numerous observations since1990 consisting of all size classes suggest the presence of an establishedbreeding population, particularly considering the number that have been killed on roads or removed from the wild by collectors, animal control officers, and researchers. It is highly unlikely that all these animals were released or escaped from captivity, and we are unaware of any person or business that possessed large numbers of Nile Monitors in Cape Coral in the past. From July 2003 (the end of our data collection period) through 22 April 2004, 50 V. niloticus ranging in size from 13 to > 100 cm SVL
have been trapped, including gravid females and 10 hatchlings between 13 and 17 cm SVL (T.S. Campbell, pers. obs.)." (Bottom of Page 6, Top of Page 7)

"We found a gravid female in August, and small specimens have been captured or observed primarily in winter and early spring." (Middle of Page 7)

http://www.naherpetology.org/pdf_files/292.pdf

"In Cape Coral, Nile monitors reproduce between April and September and hatchlings appear mainly between February and April." (Middle of Page 4)

"Hatchlings were captured in the greatest numbers between February and April. We often received phone calls about numerous hatchlings basking on seawalls and hiding in bushes during that period. The above data indicate the incubation period of Cape Coral Nile monitors lasts six to nine months, similar to African populations (Lenz 1995, 2004). Collectively, these data indicate the Cape Coral Nile monitors reproduce in thesummer months, and hatchlings emerge in early spring." (Bottom of Page 20)

Well maybe they can be breeding because the other day I went to the vet to check out one of my chondros and they had a poster their that said you needed a permit to have these animals and it was
burms, tics, green condas, scrubs, african rocks and common niles, but you dont need a permit for ornates or morph common niles. Like the reptile store I go to they have a hypo nile and I asked them dont you need a permit to sell common niles and they said they dont need one if its hypo or albino.
To bad they dont allow you to do that with retics,or burms :(

Yeah, too bad there is no such thing as a "hypo" monitor.

http://you tube.com/watch?v=M5NGBEnnQgI
and I saw one that was being sold on kingsnake to as a hypo nile. Next time I go to the reptile store ill post pics of it and all. If it not hypo then what is it a retarted looking nile? Why would they sell for 1400$?

Hypo is a genetic mutation within an established species

Why would they sell it for $1,400? Because they want the money, who wouldn’t? No, that’s not a "hypo", nor was the one on kingsnake. It’s just someone covering up their illegal sales by "making it legal" and advertising it as a "hypo". Pet stores lie, you can’t trust them at all, they are in it for the money an that’s it.

Nobody is going to see and photograph wild Nile monitors copulating. These lizards are secretive, slick and very weary of people. There is little doubt that all those 12" hatchling specimens found dead on the road or captured in Cape Coral are not from eggs that hatched right here. Several females have been captured, euthanized and opened up to find fully developing eggs inside. What’s odd is that you’d expect this to occur in places like Miami, West Palm, Sarasota or Tampa, not in Cape Coral which is relatively small and basically a retirement area newly developing in Florida. I have the utmost confidence that if I released 40 Argus monitors in a wetlands area away from people here that they’d be reproducing and established within a decade (barring an extremely cold winter or prolonged freeze snap). That would be dumb and irresponsible if anyone responds, "cool. you should do that dude."

I think they should recruit some of the African’s that have experience in hunting down these lizards and their eggs.
Maybe, some of these Nigerian billionares that seem so eager to share their wealth with me.

Part of the report mentioned they may have come from an importer who wanted them to breed to save him money.
Have they lost their mind and even checked out how low priced the wild caught imports are?
Lets see, a few dollars at most each to catch and ship here, versus that time and energy it would take to round up the critters once they hatched.
Yea, makes sense to me.

I doubt they will ever fully eradicate them from the wild. Monitors are just too adaptive, and are natural born survivors.
