 Feeding price a week

I was wondering on average how much money do you spend a week buy your full grown male sav( if you have one)? Yes I know there are many variations but I tried to mke this as simple as I could. I just want to know how much YOU spend. Hopefully if I get alot of replies I will a good idea of how much money.

I feed my sub-adult (I think male) Bosc a dozen or so roaches/grasshoppers with Canadian Nightcrawlers and mice. I breed the insects and the worms, and I get the mice from a local place (live, I have to kill a lot of mice) real cheap.

So monthly, I’d say $50

Darn it! Sorry, weekly I’d say $7 for Bosc.

I’ll read the title before posting next time :).

Reed...you say you breed the nightcrawlers? Is there much involved with it? My timor and my water dragon both love them, but I usually just get them from a bait shop...I think they’re around $2.50/dozen.

Geezle, it’s simple, but you have to refregerate them. I bought one of those "pet carrier" things, its a clear plastic thing with a blue top. It’s a few gallons. I just bought 50 crawlers, dumped them and the dirt that they came with into the carrier. Weekly I pour a little bit of water on them and put some lettuce on top of the dirt.

Sounds simple enough...I’ll have to look into it a little more. What kind of turnover do you get on them...are they very prolific?

Yes, they are quite prolific. I haven’t counted them, but I can feed off a dozen a day and it doesn’t affect the colony.

Oh yeah. Using approximate percentages, what are your food items(exp. 60% chicks and 40% rats). Thanks for the replies.

70% bugs, 30% rodents. When I add birds to his diet it will be 70% bugs, 20% chicks, 10% rodents.

Carpondro,
I caught a few hundred last year (real fun) and bred the parasites out of them. When using WC insects like this, I always checked my Bosc’s stools and looked at some of it under a microscope as well (I don’t need no stinking vet ;p). I’m pretty sure that there has been enough generations of them that the parasites are gone. I got the roaches from LLLreptile, they are way overpriced, next time I’m going to Mike! I get live mice from a local place for $1/2 mice (the price is $1 each, but I get a special discount).

You should look into breeding feeders, what all are you buying every two weeks?

I have to feed an ornate monitor, a Black throat monitor, a mangrove, a baby golden tegu, 3 ball pythons. I buy 1 bag of XL mice, 1 bag of hoppers, 1 bag of small rats, 1 bag of large rats, and cricks. and mealwroms. I tried the breeding thing and did not work out to well.

Dude, I just threw my roaches into a large rubbermaid with an undertank heater and i throw food in there every few days and they breed like the world is ending tomorrow. I have never bread mice and it was a piece of cake. If you can care for all those reptiles you surely could breed some feeders. isn’t hard at all

i don’t know if I already mentioned this but it costs me about $10 a month to feed my lizards and that is just food for my feeders to eat. i am going to go more economical and get a industrial size bag of feed for rats and mice as it is $20 and will last about 6 months. the roaches get leftovers and any veggies from the garden we don’t want as well as any old veggies in the fridge. I will also go and buy some collard greens and some other greens for a totaly of about $3.00 and that will last all month. thanks

oh we are dealing with a youngin here. i seriously think you are shooting yourself in the foot with paying that much. Are you paying like $5 each for your mice or something? Do what you like if you want to just throw money away. i could see how breeding feeders could be a little hard just because it takes some time and effort but it worth it bud.
