Well when Bandit took his morning shower he must have been really comfy because he went to sleep. he loves showers and he finds a spot he likes and doesn’t move much until its time to get out. he is shedding again, it seemed like he just did. to other BT owners, does your juvenile shed a lot? thanks

This is a common misconception made by inexperienced keepers. He’s not comfortable, he’s so stressed out by the ordeal that he feels the need to shut out everything around him, because he can’t cope with the circumstances. Blackthroats don’t swim, so why does he need to have a shower unless your humidity levels are off. You’ve been around here long enough to know better. Stop stressing him out and leave him be.

he actually explores everytime i take him in there except for this morning. i think thats because i normally take him in later in the day. i also noticed for the first couple of days i had him i had him in a fish tank for the first 2 days and he was in his water bowl a lot and that was because of the low humidity. well he never goes in his water dish in his enclosure because of the high humidity it holds.

also just so you know, i put him on the floor with the shower door open and let him go into the shower if he chooses and i don’t close the door so he can leave anytime he wants. sometimes he doesn’t want to have anything to do with going in and sometimes he is in there right away. now since we all agreed that monitors are very smart don’t you think he would turn around and leave the shower if he didn’t like it? or not go in at all? i guess a person can sometimes look dumb when they assume things or maybe they just do it so much they are used to it and they don’t notice. no skin off my teeth just some good laughs. thanks

Sorry I’m sick, and I just got up when I posted.

BT: Don’t be ignorant, albigularis don’t LIKE WATER, they are not Water, or Nile Monitors.

Every time you choose to provide your animal with something they don’t need in nature, you really need to question the benefits of what you are doing. In this case, the "bathtub method" is a bad idea.

Nice looking Black throat, but they do not like water. Mine will not even go near his water bowl unless he wants to drink.

well guess what that sucks for your BT’s. just because none of your black throats like it doesn’t mean mine doesn’t. you should see my BT get into his water dish and chase fish, he does it every time. like i said if he chooses not to walk into the shower as it is not a tub then i don’t force him in. why is everyone so ignorant as not to read that part of my post everytime?

Oh yeah, it’s a good thing for a fast growing monitor to be shedding constantly. My big boy is almost done and my little un’s starting to since his appetite came back. As far as Albigs hating water, my two seem to like it when I spray them down with warm water. Not only that, but my big guy loves when I put shrimp in his water dish, he dives right in looking for the slippery little things. He’ll dive in even for a tiny morsel and he ain’t hungry, with all he gets. If he’s at the other end of the enclosure and I open the door with food for him, he takes a shortcut through his water rather than going around it, so I don’t think they all don’t like it. Maybe some don’t , but others may love it. I doubt anyone who really cares about their monitor, would even think of putting it through something unnecessarily, that would stress it out.
Here’s some recent pics of Brutus. Dirty and shedding and growing like a weed!

Blurry picture of him trying to get at his food faster than I could give it to him.

Are we in first grade? Sounds like you feel threatened or something.

I personally think that the amount of years of experience means nothing. A person with 1 year experience could be waaaay more knowledgeable that someone with 20 years. It just depends how much you actually learn and absorb from the experience you are getting. Being openminded and observing will help wth that.

I don’t understand why you feel the need to give your blackthroat showers but thats you and your animal. I hope it does as much good as you seem to think it does. I wouldn’t even take showers if people would stop looking at me weird everytime I choose not to.

My bt despises water. Everyday I refill his water dish, come back 20 min. later and he or she has completely buried it with dirt.

Thanks, I can’t tell you what a relief that is.
It was almost like he was hibernating and then once it warmed up, he’s like, okay I"ll have two of those and one of these and ten or fifteen crickets while I’m waiting!
I just got a shipment of quail of assorted sizes, some for each of them, so hopefully, he’ll like them too. As for Brutus, I’ve yet to see him refuse anything.

BTW- I’m sure BTbandit isn’t recommending all new owners of baby monitors, take them in the shower with them. That would most likely, stress them out and could make them stop eating.

Because she went in the water to EAT means she LOVE water? hahaha
No because you’re albig fished for fish does not mean he likes water. If you’re albig is soaking I can see why. (your husbandry is lacking).

in Africa when the monsoon seasons come guess where the albigs go? They leave their burrows and head into the tree’s. Swift moving water = death drowning.

Chad

if you read right I told you he doesn’t soak, he did when i had him in a fish tank for the first 2 days but that because he was in a fish tank. i am done with this post as all you guys do is pick and choose information and then don’t even have the right info when you do. i also didn’t say that it means he likes water because he got fishes out but it also must mean he isn’t deathly afraid of it at the worst or he wouldn’t go in. also how does the swift moving water of a flood compare with soaking up some water in the shower. what idiot would go into fast moving flood water. just because they do that doesn’t mean they hate water but that they are smart. i love your reasonings.. i would assume that even animals that love the water for sure will try to escape fast moving flood water.c’mon man, i am cracking up like crazy here. what glue have you been sniffing buddy or what meds do you need??

Ok that was mean of me.

I see a bloated stressed albig. (ovaulsly not liking water). I also see the shower is on = moving water, sure not swift but moving in the same.

Why he went in? I’m not sure... stressed from being ripped out of his cage, and put on the floor with a huge animal above him would stress me out, I’d just run anywhere.

All my facts were fine, I misread I thought you said he soaked. (as you stated in the old cage).

Cheers,
Chad

If I said I had two days of herp experience, you would be just as wrong as you are now. I’ve been keeping herps for 8 years if that even matters.

Misting your albig is one thing, but yanking it out of its home to shove it in an unfamiliar place and force it to bathe is another. Why do I need to own an albig to tell you something so obvious. I could have owned albigs for 20 years, and have fed all of them dog food and hot dogs. So what exactly is your point?

If you were to try and raise any monitor species to adulthood on nothing but dog food and hot dogs, would it die before it reaches adulthood or would it just be in bad shape? Just for fun...

Provided that everything else was in order, it might make it to 5. At the store where I work, people often brag about that sort of thing. When I tell them the animal should have live more than 10 years, they get very offended. But honestly if your dog died at age 5 from poor care, you’d get fined by the SPCA. There is not the same level of awareness with reptiles. Understandably so, you have this fool here who wont even logical except advice out of pure stubbornness.

Go figure.

I agree, how about we take you out of your cozy warm bed in the winter and put you out by the lake and let you stay there. Would you like that? I’m going to go ahead and say you wouldn’t. When you have to wake up in the morning to get up and actually go to school or work in the morning, I know you don’t want to cause no one wants to. You being forced to get up and do something you don’t like is exactly what you are doing to your monitor! LISTEN TO THESE GUYS!!! They know what they are talking about. Just from reading posts on this site and taking in as much knowledge as I can I have learned so much. I dont own a monitor anymore because I had to move out to a downsized room due to my parents moving out of state but even a begginer would know that from the site of your picture your monitor is stress to the max. A healthy monitor is one that is not sitting still under water pouring down on im, a healthy monitor is one that is active all the time. When you say that he messed around in his water bowl to get fish doesn’t mean he enjoys it one bit, he was hungry like any other monitor and did what he had to do to get some food. Stop being so da** stubborn and take in some good advice. Leave your monitor the h3ll alone. Keep it in its cage and let it be a monitor. Out in the wild they dont get picked up, they dont have food handed to them, and they act from natural instincts. Yours cant do that and it relies on you and your judgement to do what is right. And not taking him out of his cage and shoving him by or in a shower is not using good judgement at all. Everyone on here is trying to give you good advice and when you come back with smart a** remarks this is what you get, talked down on. So wise up, grow up and treat your animal correctly and take advice from these people that have way more experience than you do. The years that I have been on here, there are few people still here that know exactly what they are doing and talking about and a few of them tried giving you advice and you threw it back in their face like they didnt know crap and obviously your the one that doesnt know jack crap or else you wouldnt do this. So wise up!!!!!!!!!
