 Ackie Enclosure

Im making a 6 Long 2.5 Wide 4 Tall enclosure for a trio of ackies, and have two questions:

Im making it out of a frame of 2X4’s with oriented strand board as the walls.. Should I just seal the board or liquid nail some FRP to it? I was thinking of liquid nailing FRP to it to give it an extra good sealing.

Also for hatchlings. I know they can be housed alone in a 20 long but what should three of them be housed in together?

Thanks in advance and Im just making sure that I give the best for them, Im here to learn and please feel free to critize me as it will help me not hurt me :D

FRP will do real good but it has to sit and dry and air out. I think it will take a few weeks. And Im sorry to bust your bubble but your cage is not gonna be suitable for a trio. 6’ long will be pushing it but and the 2.5’ wide will not work. Your best bet would be a 8x4x4 cage. Ackies can get up to close to 2’ long so you will need to make your cage bigger.

I disagree Josh, a 6x2.5x4 would be fine for a trio of ackies. Somme people keep trios in 4x2x2 horse troughs, now that is not cutting it IMO.

To me, the bigger of a cage the more you see natural instincts. Like when I talked to Krusty he said he wish he would have gone bigger on his cage for his adults. but IMO I would do a 8x4x4. If anything I would go more in width instead of 2.5’. I think if he went atleast 3’ if not 4’ then it would be completly fine but thats just my 2 cents on the width r the cage.

You must not have any idea how bad it would suck looking for ackie eggs in a 8x4x4’ enclosure...haha Cheers, Lance

Ha no I don’t. Guessing it’s not to fun but to me I think it would be nice to see some more natural behavior with some more space. I know that it’s not fully on the space but instead what’s inside the cage so I know that, but I think that it would be very intresting and would be super fun to sit back and watch a nice trio act natural in a decent sized cage. That’s what I’m planning on building maybe for the trio I will be looking to get before long.

The animals health and whatnot comes before breeding. I am getting a trio because I like to watch them interact with eachother. The reason why its not wider is because I am making this in my barn and I cannot fit any wider through my door. So 4X4X2 is ok for a trio but 6X2.5X4 isnt? Mine has MORE room. Square feet on the ground is 1 less but it has more climbing room. I wish I could fit it in the door. I would of made it 6X4X4.

On the FRP ... It comes in boards. I was going to get them cut then liquid nail them on. Would it be better to apply it on in the liquid form? This is my first large enclosure.

I am trying to learn here as this is my first large cage and my first monitors! Ive talked to a few people and they said this cage size is fine. Ive already got the frame done for it.

Since you’ve spoken to one fella who has already successfully bred ackies and hatched out offspring and has said your cage size is fine then go for it. Maybe you should concentrate on what is going in the cage now to maximize it’s usefulness for your critters. As with anything, opinions vary as do levels of experience. I say, take advice from those with proven successful results.

Thanks, Im here to learn and hearing Im wrong is learning. Im not a new to herps at all. I have 30 CG’s 10 leachies, 2 chahouas, and a pair of woma pythons. They are going to get a very good setup and will have everything they need and more.

On the FRP note what do you guys think? Liquid and apply or board and liquid nail it to the plywood?

liquid nail the frp to the plywood then make your cuts. Use a roller a rolling pin will work to spread the glue between the FRP and plywood. I don’t know about liquid FRP. If your talking about fiberglass or epoxy then I’m sure they would be better than sheets of FRP. Still as I said I’ve never used the fiberglass or epoxy. I know FRP works well.

It is bad enough looking for argus eggs in an enclosure that size. I would go nuts looking for ackie eggs in there.
