Water and non Aquatic Varanids. Update as well.

As most of you know. I keep Albigs, Ackies, and one Timor.
None of these are Aquatic species of Varanid.
I’ve kept an array of species over the years.

Ok the point to this post is, that none of these non Aquatic species shouldn’t be bathed or, sprayed directly.
I just sprayed all my Varanid besides my Timor.
Not on of them liked it. That’s six out of six animals not liking being sprayed.
They didn’t mind if I did it near them some of them ended up drinking it after they seen the water. All of them either ran from the water when sprayed or backed up, and looked at me as to say "what in the heck are you doing?".

I’ve had the same experiences with most other non Aquatic/high humidity species.

Ok update time.

Everyone is doing pretty well. No eggs that I can see from my Ackie.
She swelled up, then went thin, so I dug for eggs with no avail. She swelled back up, a little over a month ago, and has not lost weight. Not sure if she’s just fat or having problems?
She eats fine (prefers smaller meals), she’s defecating normal, so I don’t think it’s an impaction.
I’m unsure of age, maybe she’s just getting older?
The two males are fine, I ended up selling the smaller of the three males I bought. Now the ’most bold’ one is a beasy now. Once I sold his gay buddy he’s hid most of the time. In this last week he’s been out eating more normally now.

The albigs are all good. Cut Throat (male) is growing like mad! He’s almost caught up to Silver, which she might be gravid right now? I didn’t see any breeding but she’s a bit swollen, and hips look a tad bit thin. Though she’s never been a heavy eater/had much weight to her.

Timor is pretty good comes out when he wants to eat, then goes down for a few days, hopefully once I get him set up nicer, this will change.

Here is a few pictures of my Girlfriend helping me out with feeding the Ackies. Such a great women couldn’t ask for better! My question is why is she with my dumbbuttmunch? haha

And a picture of my ever growing False Water Cobra for kicks.

Cheers,
Chad

Damn Chad, who’s the chic?
She’s ever purdier than you.
Aint monitors fun? Just as soon as ya think ya have things figured out, the do stuff to confuse us and teach us, we don’t know squat.
Just keep supporting their needs and everything should, or might fall into place.

Scott can’t you read? lol
That’s for sure we don’t know jack. haha

Dean, It’s him or one of his butt buddys.
Ever since I put his original ’drowning’ of his Monitor up he’s been a total @ss to me. Try to get to me any way he can. Write crap about me to others, and on his and muffdaddys forum etc...
I can’t kill a monitor without everyone giving me crap for years, but yet everyone else can do it, and get sorry’s it happens to everyone etc...

Cheers,
Chad

I have the same thing happening with the female timor Chad. She swells up then looses the weight, I dig for eggs and find nothing. All I can figure is my nesting options suck and she’s resorbing.

I had a good chuckle reading the thread about the fellas albig loving the shower. The same mentality drives the idea that monitors love being petted because some lay still and close their eyes while being stroked.

I think your overdue for hatching some eggs chad. ;)

Roger

Did our friend Danceswithsatan manage to get an account here again, ha ha ha? I thought he had his own forum where all the kiddies believe in him and all the housewives share in his fantasies of gular pumping and teething monitors, heh heh.

Yes I can read, it’s your fault I missed the last paragraph.
Ya see, I was happily reading along when , wow, it’s a chic, on Chads thread????
And wow, she’s a cutie, and I stopped reading to look.
Ya know, if I wasn’t old enought to be err... ummm... aahhh........her big brother, yea, big brother sounds good, I might have to try to steal her away.
She likes critters, that’s cool, but, dude, why’s she with you?
Just kidding with ya, when’s the wedding?
Ya gotta invite me, Roger and Mike.
Just be warned, we’ll only be there to kiss the bride.
Don’t worry, I always carry plenty of tic tacs.

I have crocs and lacies. I hose the enclosures down about every other day in the summer. The lace monitors hate it and run for their hides or climb as soon as they get wet. The crocs really seem to enjoy it and make no attempt to flee from a good soaking.

However, neither species will soak in a tub. I’ve tried very large pools in booth enclosures and they avoid them. I’ve seen one of the crocs accidently enter the water and it was total panic.

I really do believe, with the exception of a few species, that monitors and water do not mix. If your monitor is spending a lot of time soaking it might make sense to double check your husbandry.

I don’t know what this list consists of, but my roughneck really enjoys a good soak. He doesn’t spend all day lying limp in his tub, rather, he ducks his head under and swims around. I sometimes throw in crawfish for him to catch. He seems to appreciate that as well. There’s nothing wrong with his levels, the humidity is always ^80% except for the basking area. It just seems to be his nature.

Anyway, since we keep referring to these varanids that do enjoy water, why not list them? Here’s a few I can name off the top of my head:

-Rudicollis
-Dumerili
-Salvator
-Indicus

Anybody care to add?

-Chris

ornatus, mertensi, come to mind. Few other species I can think of that wouldn’t mind water would be, jobiensis, doreanus, juxtindcus, and perhaps melinus.

Thanks for the reply John sound exactly what I had in mind for those species.

Cheers,
Chad

My Argus are annoyed by spraying (who wouldn’t be?), but they do swirl in the water tubs now and then and are very good swimmers. My female Argus swirls around after laying eggs and being encrusted with dirt. I think she’s doing it to get the dirt out of her ears and nostrils. As for my Ackies, Kim, and Tristis - they avoid even walking through the water tubs.

My Albigs. They do the same thing your rudi does as well as fishing out shrimp. In fact, Brutus has gotten into the habit now, when he thinks the feeding session is done, he goes over to his water bowl and ’searches’ for shrimp. He gets stuck in there and finds even the tiniest morsel. He obviously enjoys it.
I mentioned the ’shrimp in the waterbowl’ to Krusty weeks ago, long before I was told ’Albigs don’t like water’.
