 Thinking about buying a monitor

i have been doing alot or reasearch on a lizard to buy . I was looking at monitors and tegus, but i have been turned towards monitors because tegus hibernate about 4 months. the main type of monitor i am looking at is the savannah. from what i have read in the past few months ,really none of the stuff was from real owners and the stuff that was seemed wrong. i have heard of cage minimums from 6x3x3 to 8x4x4. i was looking into building a 6x4x3(or 4)(l,d,h) would that be ok? im putting internal hardware and getting wire guards. acouple of things i want to know are
1. about how big will a savannah be in 3 mo.,6mo. 1year. (i have a 50 breeder for now but im selling to a friend in the fall)
2where is a good spot to find light guards
if you got and other good monitors that get 3ft-5ft and are under 200 please tell me( i would normally spend more but i cant spend as much because i have to build a cage and buy the monitor and food) im only 17 but i have a pretty good paying job to buy food (about 10 a week for my snakes) im selling my boa to a friend because he was working with it for a while and only likes him . that will make my food bill to 5 a week + the monitor food. if you got any cage plans that cost under 250 or pics of your monitor/cage please post them here

The four threads I just bumped to the top of the board contain some good discussions on the feeding, caging, general care and costs of varanids.

Tegu’s only hibernate if you let them. If you keep the temps up, they will not hibernate and things will be dandy.

Savs only thrive with owners who use proper grammar. Strange but true.

Colombian Tegus (T. teguixin) don’t normally brumate (hibernate) at all. Problem is that they explode out of nowhere under leaves to try and take my hand off when placing food in the enclosure....wait, so do Argus!

if i got a tegu it would most likely be a red, blue, or argenting b&w
i would rather get a monitor because of the higher humidity levels with the tegus. i am making a cage , but i dont know how well the humidity is going to hold but i will be able to hold up to 60 for sure. one thing on the cage design im having trouble with is the front i need a way i can view but im not completly sure how to do it. i would either like doors with a hinge or a sliding door. i dont know where to get a sliding door or how much they are tho and i dont know if i would be able to put it in. if you got any ideas or pics please post them
p.s - whoever put the thing about grammer needs to get a life and stop worring if everythings perfect

I use recycled windows from a scrap aluminum yard, or buy pieces of glass and plastic tracks. The windows are much easier. You could also find a jewelry store display case and use those doors on sliders.

There are over 50 species of monitor. Some need much higher humidity levels than tegus.

Just look at all the pictures on "How To" Cages about 10 topics down here. There’s all kinds of ideas there. No need to make everyone post the same old pictures again.

Cheers
